White-knuckle Driving

by DesertRat

Driving in Mpumalanga, Gauteng (the province including and surrounding Johannesburg and Pretoria), and KwaZulu-Natal is rather more exciting than one might rationally expect. Unlike the Western Cape, whose drivers seemed quite civilized to me, the antics of drivers from the northeast of the country are almost certainly certifiably mad when they get behind the wheel. I've driven in upwards of 30 or 40 countries in my time, but nowhere else have I felt I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown when I came to a halt after three or four hours on a South African highway. The problems arise principally when you venture on one of the so-called N-roads or national highways. Built to western standards, the roads are well-engineered and well-maintained. Fine. Now you add lots -- and I do mean lots -- of fast cars and drivers who show absolutely no respect for the posted 120 km/hr (75 m/hr) speed...

Don't let your holiday crash

by Tamrundle

Keep cameras out of sight, lock car doors and keep car windows up. It is very rarely that anything goes wrong but when it does in South Africa it goes far more wrong than it does in Europe. End of the month and Fridays and Saturdays look out for other drivers on the roads who have just been paid and have not grasped the admittedly stringent drink driving rules.

Dangerous?

by MikeAtSea

I am reading a lot of writings about South Africa being dangerous - hence my advise and five pence to that subject. South Africa is a large bustling country and as safe or dangerous as any other place on earth. One of the main reasons people are getting mugged is because they are careless. Do not carry large sums of money with you - do not flash jewellery and ask locals for advice as to where to go. If you are cautious and travel with your eyes open you will find South Africa as pleasant and SAFE as any other city or region in the world.

AIDS!

by MikeAtSea

South Africa has got one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world, with estimation that one in three black South African's has the virus today. Hence use prevention; else you probably play Russian roulette with a fully loaded gun.

Malaria!!

by MikeAtSea

Certain parts of South Africa are Malaria areas, those are the regions of Northern KwaZulu Natal, the regions around the Kruger National Park and parts of the Limpopo Province. I have had it twice and it is not fun...! If you are traveling in this region take precautions towards Malaria. If you do not take medication in prevention and you have the following symptoms after your return go straight to your doctor and tell him you were in a Malaria region: Flue like symptoms, combined with headache, backache and fever. Remember malaria kills almost a Million people each year and the longer you wait the more the parasite will multiply in your blood – the result is fatal!

MORE ON MALARIA

by PEE-WEE

Malaria is a word many people associate with game parks in Africa. However only two of the South African National Parks are in a malaria risk area and they are the Kruger National Park and Mapungubwe National Park, although at both these venues the risk is usually low. Historically there have been incidences of malaria in other parks, but then there are recorded incidences of malaria from urban Europe and other non-risk areas. But to all intents and purposes Kruger is the only malaria risk park in the SANParks’ set-up.Anti-malaria prophylactics are thus recommended for visitors for Kruger. The highest risk period is between December and April (end of the rainy season). A 24-hour malaria hotline is available on +27 (0)82 234 1800 to give detailed explanation on risk and advice on precautionary measures. Visitors wishing to take prophylactics should consult a knowledgeable medical...

Use your head!

by sunshinejo

When I tell people I went to South Africa, they often look at me in surprise and ask something along the lines of "South Africa? Really? Isn't that a bit dangerous, going there on your own?" In all honesty, yes, the first couple of days were pretty intimidating, but I soon got over it. My advice to anyone travelling to South Africa, would be to use your head. If you wander around on your own at night or flash your cash, then there's a chance you might run into trouble. Most hostels/hotels are pretty good though, all you have to do is ask. If it's not safe to walk into town, then they often provide a shuttle service, or will at least tell you a safe way to get there, and they'll let you know what areas are safe and where the no-go areas are.

Mugging a big problem!

by TracyG

In Jo'burg, crime is a real problem. If you are mugged - and unfortunately, there is a very high chance of this, never try to resist, just hand over what you have. Always keep some money handy for this purpose, and store the main bulk of your cash elsewhere. (Hopefully things have improved a lot since I was there in 2000.)

BUFFALO IS THE MOST DANGEROUS animal in Africa.Would you believe it? Buffalo is number one killer of humans. Probably because of its misleadingly tame appearance, many are driven to think of it as a gentle and harmless beast. WRONG!Their sprint is amazing and I'm happy I didn't experience it. If they charge, chances to survive are scarce.

Sunrise and sunset hours are the best for animals sightings. This buffalo was killed near a pond by a lion a few hours before dawn. When we got there, a cloud of vultures was feasting on the poor carcass, while a few suspicious hyenas were lurking from a distance. Two lions were still nearby, hiding in the bush and mounting guard to their lunch leftover. Despite this, we yelled at a couple of guys getting out of the car to take better pictures.ALWAYS STAY IN YOUR CAR! Your meat may taste good....
