Kruger National Park

by ant1606

Best way to enjoy Kruger park is to drive around. Most roads are paved, but taking a variety of gravel roads proves more efficient for animal sightings.OBEY SPEED LIMITS and watch out for animals. They seem to be used to vehicle traffic but, especially behind corners, give a brake to animals quietly grazing and wondering who is inside that moving cage.We encountered herds of giraf, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest and even elephants clogging our road. The most impressive experience was to find ourselves literally inside a herd of about 50 elephants.Unless you want to share your vehicle interior with monkeys, roll up all windows!

Camps inside Kruger Park are safe places and, with only a few exceptions throughout the whole park, the ONLY areas where it is allowed to get out of a vehicle. Considering the huge amount of wild and fierce animals, it is HIGHLY recommended to obey this rule. Luckily, this is not a zoo but a sanctuary where animals roam free.NOTICE: make sure to return to the camp before 6:00 PM, at this time the camp gates are closed WITHOUT EXCEPTIONS. Any late arrival will be fined. Check time as it may vary according to the season.Only people allowed not to be inside a vehicle are, of course, rangers. Would you ride a bicycle among lion, rhino or elephant?

Unless you visit Kruger Park on a day trip, proof of overnight accommodation booking is requested at any of the park entrance gates. This park is quite big and it is recommendable to spend a few nights there. We spent a whole week without regrets in camps and bush lodges.Advance booking is highly recommended. We spent our first night at the southernmost camp, Crocodile Bridge. At the time of reservation the only option was to secure a space for our own tent. While pitching it in the sunset twilight, just outside the camp fence, and a few meters away from us, this hyena was walking back and forth searching for food.DO NOT FEED ANIMALS. If they get used to it they will keep hanging around camps or even try to break in. We heard from a ranger that a cheetah was found in the restrooms and attacked a guest. Inevitably, and sadly, this cheetah was shot to death.

Muggings

by Acirfa

Be very careful, a tourist stands out a mile in South Africa and that makes us easy targets. Always have eyes in the back of your head, you will learn this quickly, do not wear or carry valuables, resist throwing a rucksak over your shoulder, keep to the guidlines given. Stay on the clearly marked routes. Do not wander around the streets, particularly of a night, it is asking for trouble

NB! Tips on South Africa

by cokes

Well people hear all these bad stories of how high the crime rate is in South Africa. Yes I`m not gonna say its the safest place on earth but there is crime like crime in all big cities here in South Africa. In Johannesburg I can honestly say the city centre is not very safe , places like Hilbrow you definitely keep out of. Most places in general around Johannesburg seems to be ok.As for Cape Town , I always felt safe around there well accept for wondering around in the Cape Flats.... As a tourist I don`t think you`ll wonder around there so you`ll be ok.Durban city centre gave me a bit of the creeps , I rather prefered to go to places away from the City itself. Either Go to the North Coast or go to the South Coast. Here is more links to more warnings in Johannesburg , Cape Town , Durban , Hartbeespoort Dam and Sun City

Not all areas are safe

by Roggeveen

Especially around the larger cities you are warned not to go out alone. Just ask the hotel manager which areas are save and let a taxi take you there. We were warned in Kaapstad and Johannesburg (Soweto).

Mind you don't step on a Snake.

by two_wombles

This is actually more of a caution than anything else to anyone who decides to go running around the bush (i.e. Hiking). Snakes are usually not a problem in South Africa, in fact most snakes are most likely to be long gone before you arrive. Though there is one snake, which is a bit lazy, namely the "Puff Adder". It is a highly poisons snake and accounts for about 60 percent of snake bites in South Africa. Though not to worry too much ... it will probably not budge and inch if you had to go and sit down close to it. In fact if you don't see it, you will probably not even know it is there, even though it is known to have quite a bad temper. That said, be careful none the less, if in the bush, it is not advisable to go running around without shoes, because you may just not know what is lying in the bushveld. If you happen to see a Puff Adder, don't stress, just LEAVE IT ALONE!

Durban

by Olivaw

Durban--not my place. Durban is heavily Muslim and has the largest mosque in the southern hemisphere. The trick is trying to find it. One would think that would be an easy thing to do and even though we could spot the mosque, finding the entrance was a challenge. There were so many people and stalls of wares, people selling all kinds of stuff. And we didn't want to stop and ask questions for fear of who knows what. It was all very noisy and crowded and people in your face trying to sell you things. At one point I got tapped (attempted pick pocket) which really messed with me. So, Durban wasn't an enjoyable experience but we finally did manage to see the mosque and visited the Indian Market, but I was way over it.
