    Buying Cob fish in Witsand

by MarioPortugal Updated Feb 22, 2010

By coincidence, on my very first visit to Witsand (Western Cape) I got to meet Mr Ugene Beukes, a local fisherman, that was just arriving from a fishing ride and was happy to sell us some fish after unloading his latest catch. We, the buyers, were excited: fish could get that fresher and dinner for that night was now being planned.

Price: Cob at R35 per kilo.

Pictured for this tip, I'm holding the sample we bought for ourselves.

Cob fish is named kabeljaau in the local language of Afrikaans and it's also named as Cape Salmon in the English language.

    by nora_south_africa Written May 16, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A visit to Jongensfontein via vermaaklikheid and blombos will be a wonderful experience, if arriving in the summer bring swimwear as Jongensfontein has a tidal pool....In Jongensfontein drive along main road past shop almost till where tar road ends you will find it.
Jongensfontein has stunning scenery, great also for photography, amazing sunrise and even sunsets weather permitting.
On the gravel road between these 2 villages you will find beautiful plant life, also depending at what time of the year you drive through here...October is flower month!! but even july has nice flowers..
Jongensfontein also has a good campsite right on the beach( bring shoes for beach swimming)

    Good fishing in sea

    by nora_south_africa Written May 16, 2009

Witsand has very good fishing for sea, even if you have a speed boat.
So if you love fishing then please bring your equipment and dont forget you need a license for sea fishing in South Africa, available at most post offices

    Whitsand

by chikidee Updated Apr 28, 2005

Whitsand is a very small town just to the east of the "De Hoop Nature Reserve".
The shore is very flat and when it's low tide the water gives way to a big sandy beach. It's a bit tricky, however, because you see the waves breaking far away from you and you wouldn't expect the water to get all the way to you! Be careful, it's very fast and you cannot run away from it! But all that can really happen to you is get wet feet because the water isn't deep.
However, it feels like in a desert when you look around you. The houses of the town disapear behind the dunes...
Apparently there are so many whales in the bay than no where else along the coast. Unfortunately, you will only see flippers or tails because it's so flat!
Absolutely fantastic, and almost no tourists!!!
If you have time you can go for boat rides along the river and go whale watching!!

    Ferry in Malgas

by chikidee Updated Oct 31, 2004

This ferry in Malgas is the fastest way to get from Witsand to the "De Hoop Naturreserve".
It's acctually pulled by only two men and no engine! And there is space for only 2 cars.
In the plants along the river there are hundreds of shiny red birds! A big contrast to the green plants!!

    swimming in sea

    by nora_south_africa Written May 16, 2009

Swimming I would advise from November to March, other times the water is for most people too cold for swimming, watch out for swimming right at river mouth....SHARKS! love it there.
