    Zanzibar beaches

by SirRichard Written May 27, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Zanzibar has got many wonderful beaches all around. The best ones are those facing the Indic Ocean, in the north and east of the island.

The beaches of the east are longer and wider, white sand and they use to have a coral barrier close to the sore.
The beaches in the north coast are smaller, but very nice too.

Most of the big hotels and complex are in the east coast. In the north you can find little bungalows with very basic amenities, is a bit "wilder". There are no buses to get to these beaches (as far as I know) so the best is to rent a 4x4 in the Stone Town.

    Kilimanjaro trekking

by SirRichard Written May 26, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Kilimanjaro (5892m) is probbly the most famous mountain in Africa. The main reason people come to Moshi is to climb the mount, or at least try it. It can take more than a week to do a reasonable climbing and is no easy walk. The landscape up there is phantastic (I haven't climbed, but I've seen some videos), but it takes time and money. If you are in a hurry, it's still worth coming here for the Kilimanjaro National Park and the fabulous views of the Mount with its white top.

The Ascent of Kilimanjaro can be done from six routes: Mweka Route, Umbwe Route, Shira Route, Rongai Route, Machame Route, Marangu Route. The Marangu route is the easiest and the most popular. Depending on which route one. wants to use, the climb of Kilimanjaro can take between four nights to six nights on the mountain. On the famous Marangu Route, accommodation is in alpine huts while on Machame Route it is camping throughout. While expert guides and porters will accompany you on your climb, unlike Mount Everest, no technical equipment is required.

In Moshi you can find a wide range of agencies offering you guides, porters...

    Safaris

by SirRichard Written May 26, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Not exactly a sports tip, but you will end the journey really tired if you take a safari in Kenya or Tanzania...

This is one of the main reasons people come to Africa. You have a great range of commodities and prices. Starting in a basic 100 US$ per day up to whatever you can imagine. We ;-((( took a basic one, that means: an old Land Rover, tents, a guide-driver, a cooker, entrances to the Parks and unlimited comments about wildlife. Anyway, if you can't afford a Lodge, you can always go there at dawn for a cold beer watching the sunset, or even have a "Game dinner" in one of them. It is a great african experience too!!

The first days of the safari you will take photos of every living being, even cats and dogs, if they pass by your car. At about the 4th day, you will be fed up of impalas, zebras, birds, wildebeests... and you'll go for the big five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino.
