For those who do not have cars, the only way to travel long distances is by bus. These are nowadays air-conditioned and very comfortable, or by minibus for shorter distances. Unfortunately, development has caused heavy traffic on the major highway from Port Sudan to Khartoum. Long articulated lorries carrying heavy containers, oil tankers, buses , cars all make the road congested and the road is only wide enough for two lanes of traffic. As a result, accidents are frequent. The long vehicles frequently are involved because tyres explode and spread the rubber and steel everywhere. This also makes the lorries topple over or spin round , hitting cars nearby.
When driving along, it is common to see burnt out buses, wrecked cars, dead animals and pieces of tyres as evidence of such accidents.
At the time of the Eid, precautions are taken and minibuses and coaches assemble and travel in convoy with a police escort, to prevent them from speeding and causing accidents.
