The road from Khartoum to Wad Medani is the main highway to Port Sudan. It is used by buses ,articulated lorries as well as other transport. Although the road is tarmac, it was not constructed to carry the volume or loads that it has today. Pot holes are rapidly filled, but not much can be done about the noticeable ridge/ruts on the lane coming from Port Sudan and going to Khartoum. It is a very stress-inducing drive, especially at night when the headlights are blinding and give no indication as to the size of the oncoming vehicle. Add to that , some people drive off road and their headlights are quite confusing too.So anyone who dares to drive here, needs to be especially careful and be on constant alert for oncoming madmen trying to overtake, pedestrians, animals, and unexpected barrels at police check points.
A further distraction is that as you approach Medani there are numerous advertisements for a mobile phone company attached to posts every few metres along the road. They have a hand with one or two fingers, a fist or a pointing hand. Most distracting.
