In the summer it is very very hot. Cotton is the most suitable fabric to wear, and the garments should be loose and have long sleeves. Trainers are good for walking in the desert or around archaeological sites. Some form of headgear [cap or scarf] is necessary . In winter it can very cold, so a sweater of jacket would be needed in the evening or early morning.
No.1 on the list should be sunscreen, the higher the factor, the better, as the sites offer no shade.
With most people now having digital cameras, it is obvious that sufficient memory and rechargeable batteries are essential. However, an adapter is a must. I had experienced trouble further south with the flat type of plugs, so got an adapter to round two pin- as everywhere I had seen there were only two-pin sockets available. On my last trip here the place we were staying had both round and rectangular 3-pin sockets; but, my adapter was not of the right width to reach the holes. Fortunately, I thought, one of my cameras can take ordinary batteries, so we stopped at a shop and bought heavy duty AA batteries[ a box of 24!]. I put two in and the camera opened, and froze. I had to change for a second pair to get the camera to close. What a waste, and a disappointment.
A compass is useful at times.
A torch is advisable to have. Although electricity is pretty reliable nowadays, there are occasions when a torch would be necessary, and it can be useful when looking inside monuments- the temple at Jebel Barkal is very dark. Ladies face many difficulties as toilet facilities are non existent. After my experience in the Blue Nile [see warning] I obtained a portable 'bottle' which can be used for men , or with an attachment, for women. It was invaluable . Just get behind a tree or car or even friend, manipulate the bottle and its splashguard [for women] underneath your clothes and , still standing , use it. Then empty under the tree which probably needs the liquid anyway. Bottled water is a must when it is hot. It is readily available for 1 or 2 SDG Leave a Comment
