Crashing through the desert on a truck
Small pick-up trucks make the journey to Kerma from Dongola whenever they are full. The best place to find a truck is at the ferry across the Nile, as the road to Kerma heads north along the opposite bank. The journey takes a few hours, and is extremely bumpy and windy...hold on tight! It costs about £500 each way, and you pass the ruins of Kerma a few kilometres before the town. Transport only runs each way once...so if you visit Kerma from Dongola, it won't be a day trip, unless you hire a taxi for the day (expensive, but maybe worth it, as you'll be taken directly to the ruins). If you decide to use public transport, come prepared...we weren't expecting to find absolutely no buses whatsoever in the early afternoon ;@P
