 | Al Ubayyid Nightlife | Tips 1 - 2 of 2 | | Popular Nightlife | Miscellaneous Nightlife Tips | All Tips (2) Technically I suppose the Turkish cafe should have gone under 'restaurants' as you go in to eat and drink. But given the paucity of nightlife in Al Ubayyid, it also acts as a place for the young and reasonably wealthy to hang out at night, gossip and as close as they can get to dating. To be fair, the shawarma kebabs and hot food is good. However, the cakes are stale and the drinks are overpriced. That said, I was a frequent visitor as there was virtually nowhere else to go. Besides, the cakes (chocolate cakes, cream cakes, all sorts) look so delicious. It's just a shame they seem to have been baked in Turkey about a month ago and been driven here on the back of a desert truck! Being nosy, this place is also good for people watching, particularly young couples. Leave a Comment Theme: Eating and DrinkingDirections: Just north of the main souk

Victory Park, in the centre of town, gets its name from a battle during the Mahdist uprising (see must-see activities). Looking at the stalls, seats and rides in the park they seem to date from the battle itself! Its delapitated state belies its status as the premier night time hang out in El Obeid. Families, teenagers, old people, all hang out here - sipping tea, smoking sheesha, chatting, all the usual Sudanese things. There is a half hearted attempt at a funfair for kids, with a train ride and merry-go-round and a candyfloss stall. With loud music and lively people it can sometimes be a fun night out, but you have to make your own entertainment.
