Old Sennar was the capital of the old Fung Kingdom [The Black Sultans}. It was situated on the Blue Nile. The "Black Sultanate," was founded in the 16th cent and at its strongest Sennar extended over most of the eastern part of the present Sudan. The kingdom declined in the 18th cent. and was annexed in 1821 by Egypt,at that time a part of the Ottoman Empire.
When I visited there was no sign to show where to find the site , but we went with an archaeologist friend who knew where it was. The ruins are not very clear but there are /were so many artefacts lying around: bits of broken pottery, china and glass , grinding stones and hammer stones.
The locals took picnics there and collected bits and pieces, but our friend said this was forbidden as the site had not been examined yet. With no guards , how could this be prevented?

I have managed to photograph a few purloined pieces: a couple of rubbers [back left], hammer stones [back right], a piece of a clay pipe [front left], a piece of pottery recycled as a piece for a game ; a piece of pottery with Arabic ; coloured glass [centre and right]

It was very quiet and peaceful out there; hard to believe it had once been a town- except for the flies!

Sennar Dam

Sennar Dam was built in the 1920s by the British to furnish water to irrigate the Sudan Gezira Scheme . Water collects behind the dam and is released into the canals that criss-cross the fertile Gezira clay plains. Trains, cars, people and animals cross the dam .
During the flood season the waters of the Nile behind the dam become brown with the loads of silt washed down from the Ethiopian Highlands.

jebel Moya is the site of a neolithic graveyard. It was discovered by Wellcome, of the Wellcome Trust. The site nowadays consists of he Boulder House, a building made of boulders where the archaeologists did their work. There is aso a beehive shaped oven made of stones, also modern. The outlines of graves can be seen, and potsherds are still scattered around. It is interesting that the graveyard is up in the mountain and not on the flat plain
