Take a run out to Old Sennar
Old Sennar was the capital of the old Fung Kingdom [The Black Sultans}. It was situated on the Blue Nile.The "Black Sultanate," was founded in the 16th cent and at its strongest Sennar extended over most of the eastern part of the present Sudan. The kingdom declined in the 18th cent. and was annexed in 1821 by Egypt,at that time a part of the Ottoman Empire. When I visited there was no sign to show where to find the site , but we went with an archaeologist friend who knew where it was. The ruins are not very clear but there are /were so many artefacts lying around: bits of broken pottery, china and glass , grinding stones and hammer stones.The locals took picnics there and collected bits and pieces, but our friend said this was forbidden as the site had not been examined yet.
