Hospitality

When visiting a house, you will be told to make yourself at home. This really means what it says, not just a politeness. You will be expected to take off your shoes and sit or lie down. All rooms contain beds or anagreeb covered with a cotton mattress and a colourful sheet. People sit on the beds or relax like the Romans did, with head supported by a hand. This way you can chat as well as rest your body. If you actually fall asleep, nobody will mind, it is all part of the hospitality.

The Rashaida

Another people who settled in Sudan were the Rashaida from Saudi Arabia. They were originally animal herders. They live in their traditional tents, wear traditional clothes and live their traditional life.They are a colourful people but reserved. The women are veiled and shun being photographed.Nowadays , instead of a camel parked outside the tent, a Rashaida family may have a lorry or a pick up.The women used to wear masses of silver jewellery and ornaments, but are now selling it and buying gold instead.In March 2006 there were a couple of Rashaida settlements between Khartoum and Abu Usher, around Turabi .
