An orchard on the island

by mafi_moya

On the Nile near the Gezira Club there are small ferries and rowing boats which will take you over the river to a small island. On the island is a great beach to laze around on, and if you wander around a bit, near a big house belonging to someone important, there's a kind of orchard of lemon groves, mango and banana trees. And also the tastiest cucumbers in the world (I can't stand cucumber normally but this stuff is delicious!) The owners are very friendly and willing to chat and it's a wonderful place to sit in the shade and watch the sunset (sorry to keep going on about the sunset in Medani but it was stunning) - just remember to make the last ferry back or you'll have to swim!

Monkeys and weddings

by maykal

Ask around for transport to Um Bahrain Island (jezirat um bahrain), which is a small island in the mddle of the Nile. You reach it via a large park which is a popular place for picnics and wedding parties on Fridays. If the water level is low enough, you can walk out to the island (you are not crossing the main body of water, just a small "canal"). Cross the forest to the other side of the island, and you'll find many places to set out a mat, eat grapefruits and smoke chicha (nargileh)! Bring plenty of liquds, though, as there is nowhere to get water on the island. Back in the park, if you walk off the main paths in the afternoon, you can see monkeys chasing each other up and down trees.
