The fertile Gezira plain is clay. Therefore, when it rains, the whole area becomes waterlogged and cars can be stuck deeply embedded in the mud, very difficult to remove. As the Gezirah is criss crossed by canals which can overflow, great care must be taken when driving at this time of year [May -October].
When the water dries out, the terrain will be uneven and deeply rutted with tracks, making driving hazardous, and can cause vehicles to overturn.
It is always safer to have a local with you when travelling off the main roads.

A sombre moment...
During my time in Sudan one of the small boats near the Gezira Club that run people across the river to the island (see the Off the Beaten Path tip) capsized and several dozen people drowned. Tragically many of them were schoolchildren.
The town of Medani was naturally plunged into mourning but the story made little impact anywhere else, even in nearby Khartoum. Unfortunately in Sudan, with old severely overcrowded ferries, "these things happen"
Sometimes I wish that instead of placing so much in the hands of "Insha'allah", Sudanese authorities would take some responsibility themselves and try to stop things like that happening so often.
