Pack for the heat
  • Tip Rating:
  • Unless you are here during the "winter" season, make sure you are packed for the heat, over 40 deg C to 50 deg C, especially between April and October. Hats, sunglasses and sunblock are essential because the sun's intensity is pretty strong. This coming from someone who's lived in the tropics all her life. Also, it's wise to bring mosquito repellent because of malaria and those buggers bite anyway.

Cotton is the best to wear here because it's cooler and produce less static.

As most stuff here are imported, it's wise to bring what you can from home because it won't be easy to get what you want and if you do, the stuff will be very expensive. The weather is very dry so bring lots of lotion or moisturiser to prevent your skin from getting dehydrated.

What you won't find in Sudan...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bring lightweight clothes, and some sandals. Women need to bring modest clothes which don't show too much flesh, and a headscarf would be useful (although you can by those easily here). You can have clothes made reasonably cheaply here, so if you're desperate then that is an option.

Most things are available, except for suncream, so bring as much as you need...high factors are best, as the sun is strong. You need malaria protection, so get a prescription for doxycycline...you can buy it here too, but you need to take tablets before you travel too. Mosquito repellent is also necessary.

Bring your camera, but don't point it at everything...you need to get a photo permit to allow you to take any photographs, and even with one of these, your subjects are limited. Don't take photos of bridges, police installments, government buildings, demonstrations, slum areas...the list goes on...

Bring a good mosquito net. If you plan to go camping, hiking or diving or do any other sort of outdoor sport, bring all your equipment with you...you won't find it here!

A torch is useful....as I found out last night when I walked into a table during a blackout! You can buy batteries here, but they don't last long...one idea is to get a solar-powered battery recharger and some rechargeable batteries....sunshine is something Sudan could export!

    No pet food here
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're planning on bringing your pets to Sudan, bear in mind that it is next to impossible to get any decent cat or dog food in Khartoum. You may find them once or twice at Amarat centre and even if you do, it will cost you a bomb to buy them. So, bring lots of pet food when you come here or get your friends to carry some too

    Bring your favorite foods
Being Malaysian, we tend to have a lot of flavours in our food. So, if you are like me, you should bring your favourite foodstuff to Sudan because it will either be next to impossible to find it here or it will be double or more the price back home. Dry foods, spices and exotic ingredients are part of my packing list whenever I come here. Occasionally, I'll bring other stuff like cheese & dry meats for my friends

    A day Trip to Meroe
It is hot and quite exposed so you need a good sun hat, and good walking shoes for the sand as it is very soft in parts.

Plenty of high factor sun block.

A cover to protect from the sand is useful

You will need to take water, and maybe food, as there are no facilities at the site, also a torch is useful for seeing the carvings on the walls inside the burial chambers.

Mosquito Repellent and a Torch comes in very handy
Very important to bring a pair of sunglasses if u want to look after you're eyes, light clothes and no dark colours, a nice pair of slippers will come in handy not the expensive ones because they might get wrecked, a good hat will always come in use,

Strong cases to withstand manhandling at airports , or soft bags that are light to carry if going out of Khartoum

trainers for walking around, flipflops for indoors.

No need to bring special gear for the weather. When it rains nothing will protect the ferocity of the rain, but rain is very limited indeed..

Nowadays most toilet articles can be found, but if you are fussy about a certain brand bring your own.
Medical supplies can be got without prescription at pharmacies. make sure you know the generic name, as different brands may be sold here. Start anti-malarial medication two weeks at least before and after travelling. A good repellent is essential.

Wet wipes are very useful for cleaning surfaces, when in the toilet, or after eating out.

Spare memory cards and batteries, or battery charger and adapter

    not really applicable

Make sure you have all the necessary vaccinations. Be careful when out in the evening and cover up because malaria is common.
