 | Khartoum North Flights and Airline Tips | Tips 1 - 7 of 7 | | From Souq Arabi in Khartoum, head to the west of the mosque to find buses going to Bahri...the route takes you past the University of Khartoum and views from the bridge are quite nice. Most buses will take you straight to the central bus depot of bahri, which is convenient for most of Bahri's limited attractions. From Bahri, you can also get buses to Omdurman, usually Shuhada, as well as to villages to the north and east. Just over the bridge is Bahri Railway Station, where trains set off from for the nightmarish journey north through Atbara and Karima to Wadi halfa and the train-ferry to Aswan in Egypt. Nearby is a smaller bus station where you can catch haflas to Atbara, Karima, and Shendi...if you are going to Meroe/Bagrawiyya, the buses to Atbara go straight past and the pyramids are clearly visible from the road. in the past the main railway station was opposite the hospital in Khartoum, but because of the growing traffic problem and the need for better roads, the railway station was moved to Khartoum North. Plans have been made to upgrade the railways to a wide gauge instead of the narrow gauge at present. From Khartoum North trains go to Wadi Halfa in the north and to Port Sudan via Atbara. Elsewhere it has been mentioned that with the improved road network many areas previously dependent on the railway, now have a road link which is faster and more reliable. One area to explore is the residential district to the south of the central bus station...head for the church belltowers, and just wander round the dusty streets. Many houses are quite old, and although a bit decrepit, it can be an atmospheric place to walk. No attractions as such, but have a look at the churches, before moving on to the Friendship Palace Hotel (you can't miss it...easily the tallest building on this bank of the Nile) for an expensive drink...(see below!) Between the Friendship Palace Hotel and the Shambat brisge to Omdurman, there is an area of green fields by the river. When the water levels are low, there is also a wide sandy beach which is supposedly quite a popular place for swimming...many locals bathe around here (usually male, and usually with no clothes on...be careful where you point your camera!). Even if the river is too high for swimming, it is still worth visiting for the views to Tutti Island and over to Khartoum. Walking back to Bahri bus station, you pass a cemetery with some unusual tombs. Leave a Comment

Hop on any bus heading to Omdurman from Bahri, and on the way you'll pass a large covered souq on your right...click your fingers to stop the bus, and you can look round the clothing market which is reputedly the cheapest place to buy material and ready-made clothes. However, don't expect to be able to try on any of the clothes, especially if you are female...the idea of changing rooms hasn't reached this part of the world yet! Leave a Comment

Maghabat Khogali is the largest cemetery in Khartoum North. It is associated with Sheikh Khogali whose tomb is in the 1st picture. The mosque of the Mirghani family of the Khatmia sect, who fought against the Turkish domination of Sudan, and wanted closer ties with Egypt is at the southern end. if you have my customs tip about cemeteries in Wilaya el Wusta, you can see the difference here. Here, there are fenced in plots, plots with low brick walls, as well as those with 'proper' gravestones or metal markers. The very important have the more ornate plots or even a gubba. My husband told me of a legend ,from his village ,connected to this cemetery. A Sheikj [Fekki el Amin] was a holy man. When he died there was lack of agreement as to where he was to be buried. His parents came from Abu Ushar and Al Hilaliya, on the west and east banks of the Blue Nile in Gezira province. The matter was solved by the corpse itself. The wooden bed it was lying on rose into the air with the dead man on it and flew to Khogali cemetery where he was buried. This is a distance of over 70 km. Since then the family of the sheikh were given the 'surname' of El Tayar- the flier. Leave a Comment Address: Hilat Khogali ,Khartoum North
