I can't imagine Gedarif appealing to many tourists...there is just nothing worth seeing there. Many of my students had told us that Gedarif was "beautiful" as they had said about Port Sudan, and I've learned to take such comments with a pinch of salt. Gedarif in June was brown and muddy...the rains bring green, and it must seem much nicer then, but otherwise, it is not pretty. I'd been told to expect lots of round huts with straw roofs, and of course that sounds rather nice, doesn't it? Well, yes, there are many huts, but almost all of them are surrounded by corrugated iron fences or brick walls, so you can't really see them! The souq would be interesting if you had just flown in directly from Britain, but I have to say it is not a patch on Kassala souq, even after the floods. The people are friendly, like they are all over Sudan, and they dress like people all over Sudan...if you were expecting to see different tribes wandering the streets, you will be disappointed, as you can't tell one from another very easily. Oh, and the coffee is not great...don't know why, as Gedarif is very close to Ethiopia which has some of the best coffee, so they have no excuse!! Overall, Gedarif is not bad, but not wonderful either. Sad to say, but my fondest memory was logging into my e-mail accounts for the first time in ages! |

If I visit Gedarif, then to use the internet is the reason, due to Kassala's unreliable services. Gedarif has a few small internet cafes (some offices with one computer available if they are not busy), but I can't remember the name of the building in which they are situated. It is one of the largest buildings, situated just up the road from our hotel, but it has a name that all the locals use...hmm...I'll get back to you! Anyway, the cost ranges from S£3000-5000 an hour, and connection is slow. If you can't find these cafes, try entering any telecommunications office, or anything that advertises computer services...we were taken to a shop which happened to have access, and the owner was more than happy to charge us £4000 for an hour. |
