Game reserves

by africaking

There are quite a few game reserves or wild life santuaries in Swaziland, all offer great services and there is plenty to see, of course they won't be huge, because the country is so small but still enough to satisfy you.taking your car is recommended, but you can hire a guide to take you out and about, sometimes you might even see more that way.

The Ezulwini Valley

by wadekorzan

This is the valley which starts just near Mbabane, and as there are not many sights in Mbabane itself, it's worth stoppng there just at the tourist office and then moving on to this valley. One of the top things to see in the valley is the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary where you can stay at Reilly's Rock (which is incredible!). On your way to Mlilwane, you can stop in the town called Lobamba to see the Royal Palace. Swaziland is the only kingdom in Africa and the royal palace is quite nice. It's not open to the public and you cannot take pictures, but it's still worth seeing. Also in Lobamba there is the National Museum which is very neat because there is a traditional beehive village there which I can highly recommend.

White water rafting

by wadekorzan

One of the best places for white water rafting is the Usutu River, and it is a major highlight of Swaziland. The rapids are Class IV, so not that calm...but alot of fun. Most of the river is calm, but the area where you do the rafting is in a gorge between the Mabukabuka and Bulunga Mountains, so it is swift and scenic. If you do the whole day excursion there you'll also get to pass through some calmer areas where you can see alot of crocodiles. Contact Swazi Trails for more info.

Mkhaya Game Reserve

by wadekorzan

This game reserve is located in eastern Swaziland, and is THE place to see Rhinos, both black and white. Rhinos had disappeared for many many years in Swaziland due to illegal poaching, and nowadays are increasing in numbers because of their protection. There still are problems with illegal hunters, and the problem doesn't seem to be going away.Mkhaya game reserve is also very small, but definitely worth visiting. Though you can do a day trip, I recommend to spend the night. They advertise their accommodations as being a "luxury tent camp", and though it was definitely not luxury, it was a really great experience.Whether you do a day trip or stay overnight, you cannot drive into the game reserve. You'll be picked up outside the main entrance where you leave your car and they will drive you into the park itself. Arrangements to visit will have to be made in advance!!!

The beehive houses

by wadekorzan

It's really neat once you leave the city of Mbabane and get into the countryside where you can see some typical villages filled with the so-called "beehive houses". The name comes from the incredible similarity between the Swazi houses and the beehives. There are 900,000 inhabitants living in Swaziland, most of who are actual Swazi. Swaziland is considered to be the smallest country in the southern hemisphere, so seeing the houses and how the locals live is interesting part of any trip to this country.

Hlane Royal National Park

by wadekorzan

This is the best park in Swaziland if you want to see leopard, lion, cheetah, elephant, and lots of other animals. It's a very large area (the largest in Swaziland) and you can do wildlife viewing by vehicle or by foot. I think that doing it on foot is a rather nique experience! There are also a couple of places to stay in the national park, but these are basically not much more than thatched huts.

The little town of Simunye

by wadekorzan

Simunye is located in the northeast of Swaziland and is really a very very pleasant place to stop. This part of the country is known for its sugar cane farms, and of all of the towns living from the industry, this is by far the nicest. Simunye makes a good base because it is very close to two parks worth visting--Hlane Royal National Park and Mlawula Nature Reserve. A good place to stay here is the Simunye Country Club.

Ngwenya Glass Factory

by wadekorzan

This place was simply amazing. Used glass is collected from all over the country and is used here to make all kinds of incredible glass products. We got stuck here for about 2 hours because we just could not leave (we liked it so much). The selection is incredible and we did, in fact, buy quite a few little hand blown glass animals like rhinos, etc, which make great, typical gifts from Swaziland. There's also a cafe here where you can just sit and have snack, a meal, or a drink. The glass factory os located right along the road when you enter Swaziland from the west in Oshoek.

Traditional goods

by sachara

At the market we saw a lot of curious things like skins as loin cloth. We also smell and saw peculiar herbs, roots and bark.A woman tried to explain me the meaning of the goods, while her husband was trying and choosing his small new loin cloth of skin.

Manzini market

by sachara

The market of Manzini is very colourful. There are not many tourists around. And the products are made for the local people.I bought a large wooden scale, in Swaziland used for meat, in our house for fruits and nuts, and a primitive funny mixer of wood. The vendors were very friendly and helpful. The women, who plaited the colourful shopping baskets, liked to explain us their work.
