THE MANTENGA CULTURAL VILLAGE

by zindara

They try to reproduce here every aspect of life in Swaziland 100 years ago. A man (the “father of the family”) explains to you everything about the village, the beehive huts, his wifes, his mother, his children, the traditions, the handcrafts, etc. The visit finishes with traditional dances and songs. There is a restaurant with traditional food although food is cheaper in any other place.

MILWANE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

by zindara

The best thing of this reserve is that you can walk free and find animals “face to face”. You can find zebras, warthogs, giraffes, impalas, many birds and the stars of the park: hippos. There is a river and a lake. Hippos are “fed” at 3 o’clock. They give them some grain so they come out of the water to eat. In the nights you can not walk or drive in the park because hippos walk around the park and it can be dangerous but from the accommodations in the reserve you can hear them growl. It is very impressive.

Swazi Candles

by Bwana_Brown

Just outside Malkom, as we headed south in the morning, we came across the Swazi Candle Factory. This was a very interesting place where they manufacture beautiful candles in many shapes and with amazing patterns on them. We had a tour of the factory and had a great time talking to the workers. The candles that we bought were ball-shaped and made for easy packing as gifts for when we returned home (I am looking at one that we kept for ourselves as I type this!).

It is well worth checking out the market stalls along the roads. You can find beautiful crafts work there. One of the countries 'specialties' is soapstone. Grass waiving is the most traditional Swazi craft.

These are located at the Royal Swazi Sun Hotel complex, in the heart of the Ezulwini Valley, between Mbabane and Manzini, at the Nhlangano Sun in the South, and at the Protea Piggs Peak Hotel and Casino in the North.

Crafts.Statues and weaven products from grassMany people regard grass merely as grass! However the grass family (poaceae) is probably the most important plant species for mans' survival and economic prosperity. It is most widespread, occuring from deserts to rain forests and is one of the worlds' largest plant families. Of some 10,000 species world wide, 976 occur in Southern Africa.Lutindzi is the Swazi name for the strong wiry grass sedge grass (coleochloa setifera)…check Comptons' 'Flora of Swaziland', no 512. It grows high up in the mountains on rocky outcrops, finding moisture in the cracks of rocks. It is not eaten by cattle due to its wiry nature and inaccessability and for centuries it has been harvested for the manufacturing of rope to tye down roof thatching. After good rains, lutindzi can grow to 70 cms long and days will be spent of the mountain side cutting bundles , which...

by dandiver

There is a Swazi Village in the north border (with South Africa). You can see there the traditional dances and villages of Swazi people and take an excellent lunch. The voices of the chorus (the Matsamo Cultural Group) are really amazing.
