If you are on a modest budget there are plenty of great places to buy quality food and snacks in Arusha. 1. Meat King...a small deli/butchers thats very popular with westerners living in Arusha.2. Sakina Best place to buy Banana Crisps!!!!Yum yum!!3. Shoprite... South African owned super market....almost everything here is imported but you can find some treats still.4. MARKETS (soko) there is a great fruit and veg market next to the BP garage......barter, haggle and laugh till you burst! Arusha has the most sumptuous fruit and veg in the world...if we everyone could get their hands on it there would be no problem eating 5 a day!!! (must be something in the soil and the sun)

Money

Credit cards and eftpos are almost useless here. There are only three ATM machines in the city and they have a daily withdrawal limit of TZS400,000 (about USD$350). EFTPOS are unheard of and the few major tourist operators that do take credit cards use the old zip-zap machines. Cash is the best , but be warned you'll need a big wallet as the highest denomination is TZS10,000 and most small retailers and street vendors will struggle to give change for much above TZS5,000. Traveller's cheques, US dollars or Euro can be changed easily at a Bureau de Change. US dollars are accepted in many shops and are often requested when paying large bills such as safaris.Tourist shops and anywhere bartering is available have two prices, local and mazungu (foreigner) which can be anywhere up to five times the local price.

Hotels listed for Tourism vs not listed

When I was in Arusha, I had learned that hotels can either be listed for tourism or not. If it's not listed for tourism, you can get hotels at less than half the price of those listed for tourism! And they can even be so much nicer! so be sure to ask around.

West Kilimanajaro Walking Safaris

Day 1: Arrive from Arusha by Shuttle and transfered straight to West Kilimanjaro. Arusha –West Kili 2 ½ hours. (1 hour paved, ½ hour rough paved, 1 hour dirt track bad in places) past patchwork small pretty peasant farms, market towns and small villages, on slopes Kili before crossing open plains entering large scale wheat growing area. Fabulous views MT. KIBO peak, Shira peak and ridge and the Northern Ice field. Mt. Meru on clear days. Short exploratory walk p.m. Overnight Napopong Camp. Day 2: Stay at base camp and take early morning game walk. Climb nearby volcanic hill (small parasitic ash cone) use as look out to spot game and perhaps walk up animals with Maasai guide. Breakfast drives to nearby Maasai boma and water well where cattle enter part way down a ramp cut out of soil. Walk back to camp (if energetic or game drive slowly back).
