The Kaole ruins are the remains of a Shirazi trading town. They date back to the thirteenth century. The ruins are of two mosques and several tombs. The buildings were constructed using coral stones. The site claims to be home to the first mosques in east Africa. In addition to the ruins, there is a small museum.
The entrance fee is very low, but it appeared to be difficult to get rid of the 'official' and 'obligational' guide who told us -- before the start of the tour -- that we should tip him. The English of the guide was fine, but he kept on saying "that's the way it goes". After 10 times "that's the way it goes", we started laughing about it. The museum was included in the entrance fee.

The German Hanging Place is the site where the German colonial government hanged Africans who rebelled against the German colonial government in the late nineteenth century. There is a small, not very well maintained memorial.
In the background of the picture, the Boma is visible. The Boma was the residence of the German colonial governor.

Bagamoyo was the capital of German East Africa in the late ninetienth century. The German cemetery overlooks the beach and the Indian Ocean. There are about 20 graves, mostly of German soldiers.
