Indian Ocean at Dar Es Salaam

by Bwana_Brown

Dar Es Salaam has always held a special place in my heart - this was the first point of contact that I had with Africa when my group of 110 'volunteers' from Canada flew over from Toronto by a charter Air Canada DC-8. We had been flying for hours (one re-fueling stop in Zurich) and arrived at night. It was so amazing to step off the aircraft into a balmy blast of air and smell the sweet scent of Frangipani! Something that I will never forget. We also spent a few days relaxing in Dar before we all went our separate ways to our postings in Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi and Uganda. It was also an experience for me to dip into the Indian Ocean for the first time - it was like a warm bath tub! This was a terrible (but good) shock to one brought up on the frigid waters of the Bay of Fundy! Photo of me contemplating another dip at Dar on my return visit.

Matemwe Beach, North East of Zanzibar, amazing deserted beach, all you see are locals, who use it as the main road to move from a village to the other with their bykes, it's so much more confortable and flat than the car road!Plus, one night in Stonetown in this unbelievable hotel called Emerson and Green... After a long day in the narrow streets bargaining for wonderful ebanon handcrafts, you feel an old sultan in his palace, and at night you climb up to the roof, where a tiny restaurant is nestled... You lay under one of the small tables and you watch the whole city while the wind caresses you and moves the tent above your head making it seem like a flying carpet... Don't even remember what I ate..!

While it can be daunting to just be in Tanzania, you must by all means see as much of it as possible outside its major tourist cities. By all means experience the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Mt. Kilimanjaro..and the beaches near Tanga. Watching the sunrise over the serengeti and watching the sunset over lake vitoria in Mwanza in the same day was exhilirating.

What memories are made of ......

by skullcrusher

I had a lot of memorable times in Tanzania, but without a doubt I remember the time my friends and I spent on the north coast of Zanzibar playing volleyball, walking the beaches, and swimming in the day and dining, drinking/conversing, and watching the stars at night. Times such as that makes life worth living.

When in Tanzania you absolutly must visit the huge plains of the serengeti and the stunningly beautiful Ngorongoro crater. Tanzania also hosts the world famous migration of animals namely buffalo and wildebeest. The Ngorongoro crater has an estimated 30000 animals on the volcanic crater floor... Exploring the spectacular island of Zanzibar. The white beaches and the clear blue ocean. The Emerson green hotel was perfectly situated.

by Imbri

Jambiani, on the East coast of Zanzibar Island, is an absolute paradise. Getting there is easy; just hop on one of the mini-bus taxis that leave from Stone Town. Jambiani doesn't have great swimming - the tide is low, and you can walk for a very long time in hot ocean water before your knees get wet - but the atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed. Just wander along the beach, watching the men sail dhows and the women gather seaweed.

While in the safari van, I believe it was in NgoroNgoro Park, we came across elephants on the road. One of the larger elephants took a dislike to us and challenged us. Our driver was very nervous but I thought it was very exciting.

visit Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara-- Ngoronogoro Crater---teeming with wildlife, which you would not suspect viewing it from the rim of the crater--it is only 10 miles wide (as i remember)--as you start down into the crater, it begins to come alive as you begin to see all the fascinating and beautiful creatures who live in it----

by narixa

ZANZIBAR: make sure to carry enough cash (us-$ best, other exchange rates very bad, cash on visa only in stone-town with high fees!), and make sure to have small bills, change is always a problem!for entering the country you need your international vaccunation-certificate. ZANZIBAR: jambiani - south-east-coast, very virgen.big difference high tide:low tide!!! no swimming when low tide.north coast - nungwi has very nice beaches with dive bases! good seafood!
