The Mwanam Bogo Dam is the larges lake in Mikumi National Park, at least in the part that is open for tourists. The lake is close to the northern border of the park and is easily accessible by 4WD OUTSIDE the wet season. Large numbers of game collect around the lake. If you have enough time, spend at least one our at the Mwanam Bogo Dam. You'll see large numbers of game arriving and leaving the area, and there is a picnic site where it is reasonably safe to leave your car.

Mikumi National Park is full of birds, ranging in size from very small to pretty large. Personally I liked the small blue birds the best. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the species, and it was impossible to take a picture of them.
Marabous were more relaxed, though they would fly away if you approach them too closely. Marabous are elegant birds with beautiful colors, and it is impressive to see them taking off.

There are a few man-made pools in Mikumi National Park. The only good place to spot hippopotamuses (and crocodiles) is around these pools. Hippopotamuses are said to be dangerous for humans, but I was more afraid of the crocodiles that were lying on the shore.
It was easy to spot hippopotamuses, as there are always a few around and they can't hide under water for a long time as they need oxygen!

There are a few man-made pools in Mikumi National Park. The only good place to spot crocodiles (and hippopotamuses) is around these pools. The pools are also the only places where 4WD drivers allow their visitors to leave the cars.
I found the crocodiles hard to see as long as they were lying motionless on the muddy shore of the pools. On one occasion, there were small children (age < 10) playing around, while a crocodile was lying at a distance of less than 20 m. Incredible! Be aware when you go out of the car, and stay aware until you're safe back in the car. These crocodiles are real and there are no zoo keepers that feed them in the morning!

The amount of impalas in Mikumi National Park is huge. In some places, you see impalas almost all around. When you approach them in a 4WD vehicle, they always want to cross the road right in front of you. As in all national parks, drive slowly and carefully!

Spotting a lion appeared to be more difficult than spotting other game. A few hours before we left the park, we were very lucky to spot three lions that had just caught a buffalo. One of the lions was having lunch while we approached him/her at a distance of about 20 m. A great experience!

Like all the game, zebras were very easy to spot in Mikumi National Park. We have seen many groups of zebras during our two-day stay. If you approach zebras carefully, they are not afraid of visitors and you will have the opportunity to take beautiful pictures like the one on the right.

There are plenty giraffes in Mikumi National Park, so it is easy to spot them. If you approach giraffes carefully, they may stay around for a while, though they tend to slowly walk away from visitors (leaving you some time to observe them and take pictures).

Elephants are common in Mikumi National Park. They are easy to spot, but they use to quickly walk away from visitors and disappear in the bushes. Sometimes, they are even a bit agressive if you cross their roads. Observing elephants is therefore not as relaxed as observing giraffes or zebras.

Mikumi National Park
Mikumi, to the north of the Selous, is only 283 km away from dar-Es-Salaam. The Park was established to protect the environment and resident animals and is also an important educational centre for students of ecology and conservation. The Mikumi flood plain is the main feature of the Park along with the bordering mountain ranges. Animals commonly found here include lion, eland, hartebeest, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, hippo and elephant. The Mikumi elephants are mainly grazers and do not cause tree damage. Lions roam the Mikumi plains and will take refuge in the branches of trees. Wild dogs can be seen in packs here.
Mikumi's vegetation includes woodland, swamp and grassland with two water holes, Mkata and Chamgore. Apart from the saddle-bill stork, hammerkop and malachite kingfisher, you will also find monitor lizard and a deadly python inhabiting the pools.
