The closest thing I came to a "trap" was a daladala (covered pick-up type taxi) ride I took as the evening grew and I was too knackered to carry on cycling. The driver was on his way home and, perhaps understandably when faced with a relatively wealthy tourist, he tried to charge me more for the trip than was feasible. "Traps" are mostly found in highly touristed places which Pemba is not.
Unique Suggestions: Don't worry. Pembans are not going to rip you off. People may charge more than for locals but perhaps they should charge a little bit more.
Fun Alternatives: Just be sensible and don't expect that everyone is out to get you into a trap. Westerners often feel this - and I have too - but you have to sometimes expect that desparately poor people will see you as an opportunity to make money. Don't let people take the ***, of course, but be "cautious whilst not losing your humour" is probably the best advice i could give.
