Pemba Island Warnings Or Dangers

Check out the Political situation before you go

by rayston

There are high political tensions in Zanzibar andPemba at times between the local, Independence-oriented party and the Tanzanian Govt. Atrocities are claimed on both sides and I was there before election time when tensions were particularly high. Tourists aren't a target for either party, but be careful at election times and check the web for info. (you won't get info on western news media).

The daladala taxis are crazy-fast!

by rayston

Some daladala (shared covered pick-up type taxi) drivers drive like they've got a plane to catch in the next few minutes. Grit your teeth and hope you don't end up like the dead daladalas I saw on the roadside occasionally. Shorter journeys on the worse roads are safest. Or hire a bicycle for a day - it's much more contemplative and healthy!
