In Arusha, my favorite restaurant is Redds. A meat eaters paradise. This restaurant is on the pricy side. For a real adventure, try Zubeda. It is a 'side walk' restaurant where the grill the meat in the open air. For a lot of people, hygienic issues come to mind but I have no complain, so far, and when I am there, I eat there at least once a week. MC Patisserie, they have good food e.g. shawarmas (mediterranean food) and lot of pastries of course.
During your Safari, the foods range from Continental to Indian style to local foods. Most of the hotels have experienced chefs who prepare quality meals.
the locals: helping out...: the locals: helping out...
Favorite Dish: my wife, assisting in making chapatis. not only are these marvelously yummy, but they were fun to make. although we took copious notes, we can't seem to recreate them at home. guess we will just have to go back!

In dar es salaam:
La Trattoria Jan, I don't remember the name of the street (near msasani shopping center), but the taxi driver will know it, and I really enjoyed the food at the New Africa Hotel near the sheraton hotel, city centre of Dar es salaam. I also enjoyed chicken kebab at the Bar es salaam, which is located in the same street as trattoria jan, in Msasani.
There are not many places in Dar where you can have a nice dinner. But if you stay for only a couple off days you can survive with: q-bar, slipway, addis in dar, sea cliff and the Indian 'snack-bar' squeezed in by the casino and the 'calafornia dreamers disco'.
Favorite Dish: At the trattoria they have very nice pizzas (especially pizza jan), but I really liked the pasta vongole, which is with clams, and lots of garlic... and the New Africa Hotel is well known for their curry's, which are fab..... The chicken kebab (1000 shilling/ 1usd per stick) or barbeque chicken (4500shilling) at the Bar es salaam were nice.

Blue Sea Restaurant, Nungwi - Zanzibar
The pizza is definitely the best reason to come here, both for lunch and dinner, if you want. But also the atmosphere is a good reason. The waiters are really friendly, and become your friends easily, even if you don't leave them any tip! Just take your time and talk to them, practice a little Swahili, and suddenly you've got a restaurant-experience that you won't forget so easily!
Favorite Dish: PIZZA, from the stone-oven they use. They change the menu every day, so you never get tired of it. It's good, but if you find something you really like, it's easy to ask them make it for you again the next day if you want...
kettravels's Restaurant Tip
I created a whole breakfast ritual after discovering that the very BEST, STRONGEST (and cheapest) coffee was sold by the wandering vendor. I would watch from my window and when I saw him approach I would make a dash for the street and chase him down with my mug. The only other item he sold was a sugary, caramel type sweet - highly addictive. I can't vouch for the nutrition value of this type of wake-me-up but it sure tasted good!
quite decent with fabulous location on second floor terrace overlooking the sea. Buy beers (BYOB) down alley across the street in ground floor bar of Coco de Mer.
Favorite Dish: Pelli-Pelli Perch, fresh and spicy
La chateau Briand: wonderful with ears and tongue on the side
we were very tempted to try this BBQ goat, but when we took a close look and saw the head the ears and the tong on the grill as well we said "give that a miss thanks"Related to:
