When walking around at night (which really isn't recommended, but sometimes when you gotta go, you gotta go!) carry a torch and wear boots. Everyone's aware of the dangers of bigger wild animals at night, for example leopards, but not many people are aware of the Puff Adder. Puff Adders have a nasty habit of lying about looking like a big pile of leaves and are EXTREMELY sluggish, and EXTREMELY venemous... so looking where you're stepping is a good idea!

The relativity of time
This is Africa! Time is a relative concept here. When I landed in the reserve, I found myself in the middle of nowhere with no one there. I waited for an hour with the pilot. He tried to contact the lodge with no success. He suggested we go up to the air to have a look and then we saw a vehicle arriving. It turned out that each side had its own version of the landing time. The lodge people claimed the plane should have landed at 11:00 while the pilot insisted on 9:30. So, be prepared to sit in the shade and wait...
