    Sunset from Africa House

One of the most popular places to end a day in Stone Town is on the first floor roof terrace of the Africa House hotel, sipping a cold drink and watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean. We found ourselves drawn there on most evenings. In those days (1999) the hotel was a pretty basic back-packers’ hostel and the roof top bar consisted of a simple counter where a barman served chilled bottles of beer pulled straight from a chest of ice, and a scattering of ill-assorted chairs (plastic and wooden) and tables dragged into position by groups of drinkers. It was not only a great place from which to watch the sunset, but also a great place to meet fellow travellers, and we had several interesting conversations here. Checking the hotel’s website I see that much has changed since our visits, and this is now a luxury hotel with a bar to match. The furniture all harmonises, the bar area is tastefully draped with cool fabrics, the bar serves exotic cocktails. But the tradition of the Africa House sunset experience has thankfully been preserved, and if it can now be enjoyed in greater comfort, is that such a bad thing? Although of course it will almost certainly cost you more!

By the way, I recommend that you don’t do as most of the drinkers did and hurry away as soon as the sun has disappeared into the sea. After dark this roof top becomes a perfect spot from which to gaze at the night sky, and you can watch the stars come out and even look for shooting ones while having just one more for the road”.

Well in our day the dress code was totally casual, but looking at the website I have a feeling that smart casual could be more appropriate nowadays

In the early evening everybody is gathering at the big terrace of Africa House to enjoy the wonderful sunsets of Africa. It's the best place for a drink, meeting friends and making plans for the evening and night. There are a lot of bars, restaurants and dancings nearby.

Nowadays the building and terrace are restored and rather fancy. For decades it was allready the favourite place to be for expats, tourists and Tanzanians of the mainland. In former times you had to bring the chairs to the terrace yourselves.

    FORODHANI GARDENS: THE MEETING PLACE

  • Forodhani Gardens are the focal point of Stone Town. They are set on the edge of the port and right in front of the Old Arab Fort. During the day this is where you meet friend or find a guide to help you negotiate the confusing maze of Old Town streets nearby. Or a guide may find you. Handicraft sellers can sometimes be found early on it the day as well.

At night Forodhani Gardens explode with activity. Handicraft sellers are everywhere, mostly centred around a white stone gazebo. Food stalls are erected and have any kind of food you want from seafood, to chicken, beef, goat and salad. Grills are set on top and the food is cooked before your eyes. If you get some food a man will approach you and offer to bring you ice cold beers for about $1. During the dry season there are also several restaurants that operate on the edge of the gardens.

Day or night, whether you go by taxi or foot, this is the starting point for Stone Town and Zanzibar. On a hot day you can find cool stone benches and some shade underneath the trees and plan your adventures or just write your postcards

Stone Town - the sunset bar is good for cocktails as a warm up watching the sun go down before a big night out! Sweet Eazy as well as a good restaurant has a decent bar too. For a late night, go in the Garage club, music is terrible, its tacky, its full of hookers but get a crowd of you and its fun!
Nungwi - have a few beers at the restaurants or theres a beach bar further along the beach.

  • Stone Town - there are a couple of clubs, playing African tunes and some international dance stuff (mostly reggae).
Friendly but very sweaty! Beer is cheap though.
Local young men can be very friendly if you are a female, so be prepared for that if you are a bit shy.
    Not touristy at all.

    Casual!
The locals are really not well off so if you dress up you will look very out of place.

Forodhani Gardens market: Lively night food market

  • The daytime market place of Forodhani Gardens turns into a local food festival as soon as the sun threatens to dive under the horizon. Iinstead of splashing out on an expensive sit-down restaurnat meal, here you can go from stall to stall and sample many varieties of food, from grilled-on-the-spot lobster to kebabs and everything inbetween. Basically a street food market, all in good taste, local mood and fairly priced.

Nothing that draws too much attention - her that means nothing too little... And it is a market mainly for locals, so follow the local dress code.

  • Starehe is a swahili word and means Joy! if you are in Stone Town and really want to go to a local place - Starehe is the thing to do. In the weekend they play reggae music in the evening/night and you can dance together with the locals, rastafarians or not..... just ask the locals at Forodhani Garden where you can find Starehe. everybody knows.... Have FUN!!

  • Every evening, there are dozens of food stalls in park in front of the Sultans palace in stone-town, Zanzibar. The place is packed with locals, music, and smells of BBQ. You can have anything on a stick from squid to chicken. Don't miss out on the sugar-cane juice and the special machine that makes it!

As we did not stay in Stone Town, the only alternative we had as for nightlife was the entertainment offered by the hotel: the karimba, cocktails in the bar and some folkloric shows. But, of course, the most memorable moments were when the sun set down every evening, which in the Equator happens around 6 pm year round.
