The water is beautifully clear and really warm. For an inexperienced diver/snorkler it is a great place to play as it is so save and really accessible.

Get a boat out to the old Prison island. Should only cost about $30 for a couple. Stay all day and go and see the giant tortoises that live there. They are brilliant.

If you are visiting the Jozani forest, or passing by car near it it is imperative to try and spot the rare Kirk's Red Colubus monkeys. These are endemic to Zanzibar (found nowhere else in the world). If you go to the park itself, the guide will surely know where to find the friendly troop of these monkeys, who don't really mind the tourists snapping pictures!

If you are looking out at sea whilst in Stone Town, chances are there is a large dhow gliding effortlessly through the cobalt waters. Their simplicity and grace cannot but hold your gaze. Watching dhows at sunset from among the Zanzibar buildings is also a highly suggestive picture ...

To enter the boat, you have to walk through the water first. So, best is wearing your watersandals. The boats are roofed, so it's possible to have enough shade, being at the open water. It can be windy and the ocean can be a bit rough.

We had to sail about one hour, before we reached the area with the dolphins. The Menai Bay Conservation Area of 420 sq KM is a protected area now, declared a "gift to the earth'' by the government and the WWF.

No visit to Zanzibar Island can be complete without a tour of the Jozani Forest. Any tour of Jozani will show you: The Rainforest, Red Colobus Monkeys (endangered species) and the Mangrove Swamp. The Forest is the last uncultivated/inhabited area on Zanzibar. Land crabs and the shy Blue Monkey are also present during your visit. You can either book a tour or just transportation, but do not miss Jozani!

The cost of entry to Jozani is very low so you will have to haggle big time for transport. You really need a good zoom camera and loads of film or memeory. The Red Colobus are inquisitive and will come very very close. They also move like the wind and it is very hard to just take a few photos to capture them.

I will build tips on the 3 seprate parts, but do not overlook the Blue Monkeys while you are here. They are very quiet and interesting, but usually ioverlooked.

** If you are driving there, watch for large Blue Monkeys running across the road where the speed humps are! **

The Jozani Forest is the only natural forest remaining in Zanzibar, while the rest has been cleared out for agriculture, spice plantations, grazing of cattle, palm tree plantations, and villages.

Anyway, this makes for a fun couple of hours exploring the forest and the mangrove forest.

It is quite easily accessible from Stone Town, some 18 km away on an asphalted road.

Built in 1698 for the Omani ruler, the fort has since been used as a prison, a depot for the railway line and a ladies' tennis club!

The fort is now open to the public with spice and craft shops in its grounds.

Strolling around in Stone Town, you can see the unique mixture of cultures and architecture, not only in the large buildings, but also in the details.

Walking in the alleyways you will see nicily carved doors, decorated with brass studs and outer balconies and verandas with fascia boards.

These influences from the Indian subcontinent fit well in the Arab architecture. For more information and pictures have a look at my Zanzibar Town page.

  • Of course, visiting a Spice Island implies you have to take a spice tour; especially if you like spicy food and want to learn about what makes that food so delicious. Anyway, spice tours can be arranged from stone town as well as from the majority of beach villages; either through the Stone Town visitor center or else from your hotel.

Guided walks in one of the various spice plantations all over the island range from a couple of hours to 4 hours. Would suggest the 2hr ones - it is too hot and is enough to learn about the spices. Zanzibar spice plantations grow an incredible variety of spices ... nutmeg, cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, pepper etc etc.
