by DAO Life changes, guidebooks are out of date and some VT tips need to be removed. There are ATM’s on Zanzibar! 4 in fact and all in Stone Town. They are linked to the outside world and an American friend with a Plus card easily got cash. Travellers Cheques can be cashed as well in several locations in Stone Town. Get Schillings in Stone Town BEFORE you go to your hotel somewhere else on the island! Your hotel will not give you a good rate. You can now also use the Barclays Bank on Zanzibar! Leave a Comment

dolphintour by sachara At the southcoast near Kizmkazi Dimbani we had a nice boattour. Because the sea was not very calm, we had to go further on sea before we reached an area where the dolphins were in the deeper water. There were 5 other boats around. In the brochures they write, that you can swim with the dolphins, but I think the sea was too rough for that. At the other boats I saw some people, plunging in the water everytime they saw a dolphin. The dolphin disappeared and the people had to climb in the boat again several times. Leave a Comment Directions: South Coast Unguja

by grets This very poignant tribute to the horrors of the slave trade stand near where the slave market was held up until the abolition of the slave trade in 1897. A reminder to the world of some of the cruel fates suffered at the hands of greedy merchants. Leave a Comment

Stonetown Street baths by Zanzibargirl A labyrinth of streets, old cobbled paths and buildings, a selection of great accomodation - both cheap and a little bit more extravagant, delicious beachside restaurants, sundowners at Africa House, old forts and market bazaars. What more could you want. Great shopping, cultured and on and island all in one. Even in the wet the streets turn into baths of fun and laughter. Leave a Comment

Nungwi Scenery by Zanzibargirl The beach coastal area of Nungwi is one of the coolest places to stop for a few days, kick back on the sand and relax, dine in its many restaurants, arrange a private beach party, party the night away or take a dive on the nearby coast near Mnemba - either snorkel or scuba. Paradise. It is inexpensive and not only that filled with great culture. Leave a Comment

Paje Beach by PierreZA Paje is a small village on the east coast of Unguja. It has the most amazing beaches; long stretches of white sand, fringed by palm trees. There is also a small supermarket where you can buy many things you might need during your trip. Paje has many smaller, non-resort type hotels.

Chwaka Bay, east coast. by Aphro Only the beaches in front of resort hotels are busy - and then by busy I mean a few tourists lying around. You can hire a dhow to take you to deserted beaches if you like. Swimming, diving and snorkelling can be fantastic around Zanzibar and Pemba. However, some beaches (such as Chwaka) are gorgeous but very very shallow. Seaweed can also be a problem if you want to swim. It is a local industry - the weed is collected to be sold. This palace was home to the Throne of the Al-Busaid Dynasty. Afterh the 1964 Revolution, the palace was used by the government for official gatherings and was out of bounds to the public. In 1994, when President Salmin Amour finally gave his consent, the palace was made into a museum. A beautiful building, the exterior depicts the influences of the time, the white two storey building sits overlooking the Indian Ocean. Unfortunately not all of the last Sultan's possessions are in the palace as some have mysteriously disappeared without trace! ( sadly, this took place over the years before the palace was converted into a museum). Displays of some of Zanzibar's trading commodities of the early nineteenth century can be seen, these include cloves, tortoise shells and ivory. The first floor contains all the ceremonial halls. It has a State Room and a Banquet hall (were the sultan hosted his 'Idd barazas') expanded in the 1930s to accommodate more people. We couldn't find the Swahili word for "seasick" by Geisha_Girl For $10 USD you can hire a boat to take you out to the coral reef (when it's high tide) where you can discover some of the beautiful underwater creatures of Zanzibar. But do note that the boatmen speak no English, the waters can be choppy, and if you soon find yourself gulping down salty water before getting a chance to greet the golden fishies, don't mind the non-English speaking boatmen laughing at you....... Other than that, the azure waters of the Indian Ocean feels like a warm bath. Leave a Comment

Beautiful Beaches by PierreZA There more popular excursions on offer include: diving and snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, swimming with dolphins and visiting the Jozani National Park. The most popular seem to be the Spice Tour and a daytrip to Stone Town. I suppose one can also visit Dar (by ferry) if you want to.
