Stone Town

Stone Town is the main attraction of Zanzibar. Its hypnotic atmosphere, dilapidated and crumbling buildings and strong Islamic traditions lure tourists from around the world for a truly unique experience.

You will find yourself aimlessly wandering through the narrow alleyways, on cobblestoned streets imagining yourself in another era ... the experience is indescribable!

The fusion of cultures on this little island is very evident, with all types of Indo-Afro-Arab architectures and a strong presence of colonial Portugese buildings. The dark stain of slavery history is also an attraction, with museums, places and monuments to visit.

A visit to Stone Town is a unique and mandatory if you are visiting Tanzania. Still, a word of caution. Stone Town is a bit overhyped - it may take a few moments to get used to - everything is dilapidated and like on the mainland, there are hustlers everywhere. But give it a couple of hours, and this mysterious place will get a hold on you and charm you - take my word for it!

Sailing

Another activity you can do in Zanzibar is sailing, and as well, is offered in the major resorts and hotels.

If you don't know anything about sailing, you can do like me, and take a sailing ship like the one in the pic (this one was a local one...).

In that boat, we were carried to a reef and spend some time surfing the crystalline waters of the Indian Ocean!!

Beach in Zanzibar

One of the main attractions in Zanzibar is scuba diving. If you don't have the license for it or you don't feel like receiving classes during your holidays you can try with snorkeling.

One of the places where these sports are offered is in Blue Bay Beach resort, but I guess that all the major resorts and hotels offer these sports as well.

Dhow trip

traditional arab dhow

4 of us paid 10USD each to hire a dhow (including 2 guys to man it) for a whole day. We went a little out to sea and went snorkelling (hire included in the price), it was great fun having the fish swim all around you. We spent most of the afternoon drinking cocktails by the beach and then returned to our hotel in time to see the sun setting on the horizon.

turtle sanctuary

only a couple of dollars to get in, we were given a tour of the sanctuary and an explanation of the work that is done there. It seems well run and the people there were more than happy to answer questions and show us the turtles. Perhaps not big enough to make a specific visit but if you are spending time around Nungwi then pop in for a visit.

Giant Turtles

When you get at prison island next to stone town you will see the Giant Turtles that came from Seychelles.
There are turtles which are 100 years old.
My wife said that as you look at them is like look at dinosaurs living today. It's amazing how the mother nature works.

Titanic

If you get the trip to Prison Island you will get there in a boat like this one. When we show the word Titanic on the side of it , we couldn't stop laughing :)
Below this boat you could see the typical fisherman boat called "dhow".

Stonetown Street baths

A labyrinth of streets, old cobbled paths and buildings, a selection of great accomodation - both cheap and a little bit more extravagant, delicious beachside restaurants, sundowners at Africa House, old forts and market bazaars. What more could you want. Great shopping, cultured and on and island all in one. Even in the wet the streets turn into baths of fun and laughter.

Nungwi Scenery

The beach coastal area of Nungwi is one of the coolest places to stop for a few days, kick back on the sand and relax, dine in its many restaurants, arrange a private beach party, party the night away or take a dive on the nearby coast near Mnemba - either snorkel or scuba. Paradise. It is inexpensive and not only that filled with great culture.
