    Spice Tours

    by Jmill42 Written Oct 30, 2008

I knew this to be one of the highlights of Zanzibar, but was fairly suspicious that it might be really lame. So, I was pleasantly surprised at just how much of a good time I had with this. Basically, you will get picked up from your hotel and brought to one of many spice farms located on the island. You will take the tour of the land, getting to crush leaves and fruits along the way. Crushing them releases their aroma, which can be so over-the-top, that you are just blown away. It really is true that smell is one of the strongest senses. You normally get a guide who is part infomercial, part comedian. It really is worth the time.

    Jozani Forest (Overview)

by DAO Written Oct 12, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

No visit to Zanzibar Island can be complete without a tour of the Jozani Forest. Any tour of Jozani will show you: The Rainforest, Red Colobus Monkeys (endangered species) and the Mangrove Swamp. The Forest is the last uncultivated/inhabited area on Zanzibar. Land crabs and the shy Blue Monkey are also present during your visit. You can either book a tour or just transportation, but do not miss Jozani!

The cost of entry to Jozani is very low so you will have to haggle big time for transport. You really need a good zoom camera and loads of film or memory. The Red Colobus are inquisitive and will come very very close. They also move like the wind and it is very hard to just take a few photos to capture them.

I will build tips on the 3 separate parts, but do not overlook the Blue Monkeys while you are here. They are very quiet and interesting, but usually overlooked.

** If you are driving there, watch for large Blue Monkeys running across the road where the speed humps are! **

    its the Spice Island

by cityhobgoblin Updated Jul 7, 2006

so you have to do the Spice Tour
Loads of people seem to do them, but its a day out, you will probably see some of the other sights around StoneTown and learn about what goes in your curry.
Seemed a bit corny and touristy but actually was very interesting and really enjoyed it and learnt something

    Spice Tour

by londonbabe Written Apr 27, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

OK, this DOES seem very touristy but it's really worth it to find out all about how different spices are grown and understand more about how the islanders live.
There are dozens of taxi drivers and tour agents who'll offer you a tour; it should cost no more than $15 per person and you'll probably get a taxi/bus to yourself (as a couple).
You get taken to a spice farm, shown lots of different plants (clove, cinnamon, cardamom, banana, ylang ylang, pepper, nutmeg - those are just the ones I remember) and then taken to a fruit stall where you get to taste loads of different native fruits.

Nutmeg. The pink plastic-y stuff is mace.
