Archipelago: Cheap, high speed restaurant (but no fast-food!)
Veghel profile photo
Veghel 280 reviews

Archipelago is situated on the first floor and offers a nice view on the beach, ocean and harbour. The restaurant is very basic and lacks atmosphere, but the quality of the food and speed of the service are very good. Tables are 'sold' at least twice a night, so the restaurant is not suitable for a relaxed all-night dinner.

Because of its location on the first floor, you're not disturbed by people selling cashew nuts and souvenirs; which is a big advantage compared to some other restaurants.

Costs for a starter are between US$ 2 and 4. A main course is between US$ 4 and 6. A fresh fruit juice or a 1.5 L bottle of mineral water will cost you around US$ 1. The restaurant does not serve alcoholic drinks. However if you ask for it, they advise you to buy a beer or wine in the bar downstairs and take it back to your table!

Monsoon: Traditional Zanzibar restaurant

View from terrace towards the beach

I planned to have dinner in Monsoon restaurant, but it appeared to be very necessary to make a reservation (at least in July 2006), so I ended up having a lunch there just before departure back to Dar es Salaam.
Monsoon has a spacious terrace with lots of shadow, and two dining rooms. One dining room has 'ordinary' tables, the other just offers cushions on the floor around low tables. The terrace -- though very close to the beach -- only offers a view on the (quiet) road, as plants and parked cars block a wider view. When sitting outside, people selling cashew nuts and souvenirs will disturb you every other minute, which is irritating.
The quality of the food was fine, but the service was very slow. Costs for a main course are around US$ 5. Drinks are relatively expensive at US$ 2 for a fresh fruit juice.

Africa House: A terrace with a view

the terrace

The Africa House is an old colonial hotel in the heart of Stone Town with a great terrace overlooking the ocean, where the restaurant is located. A perfect location to enjoy the sunset. In the past it used to be the island's British Club.

Favorite Dish: All sorts of fish meals are good - but allow yourself plenty of time, as service is really slow, even if you are the only diner there.

The dining room at the Themba hotel serves local dishes, curries and seafood. The seafood platter was great value for money, but the house speciality - beef with green banana - was not a hit with us. No alcohol is served here

Just down th road from Forodhani Gardens, brilliant food and had a lovely beach which you could sit next too. One night a guy lit a load of little wax bags on the beach and it was so romantic.

Favorite Dish: Not the food but the bongs!

The Monsoon Restaurant is a very nice place situated on the sea front near the Forodhani Gardens.
You can eat outside or inside in a beautiful room where you seat at low tables on cushions. The food is good and their light lunch menu is quite good value.

Favorite Dish: We enjoyed seating in the shade in a relaxing place.

Blues: Blues - Enjoy the view

The food and coffee are average (some even below average...) There is a wide selection (pizzas, seafood, hamburgers, etc.) but nothing is really good. Also, it's more expansive than other cafés. But...the views of the ocean are perfect. This is the place to go to after walking for hours in the blazing hot sun when you want to sit in the shade and let the breeze cool you down.
