This is the former Georgetown that just recently got its original name back. Georgetown is located on a Island in the middle of the Gambia river. The name of the island where Janjanbureh is located was Maccarthy Island, now is Janjanbureh Island. During the steamboat era, Janjanbureh was the second city of the country and had actually a very important place on the slavery market down te river to Fort James island and Banjul. Also was a very important admnistrative outpost and a a major upriver trading place.

The Gambia River is one of the smallest major rivers in Africa, running just 1,130 km (700 miles) from the Fouta Djallon plateau in north Guinea to the Atlantic Ocean at the capital city, Banjul. It is navigable for about half that length.
The river is known largely because of The Gambia, the smallest country in Africa, which consists of little more than half the river and its two banks.
