    JOHN RAYMONDS: BEACH BAR

    by alyf1961 Written May 27, 2014

This is one of the many bars along the beach, between Kotu stream and Koliolo. There is usually a young man on the beach encouraging you to come in and have a drink. They sell cold drinks and hot snacks, the snacks are occasionally not available when the electricity goes off.

OSCARS ON THE BEACH: BEACH BAR

    by alyf1961 Written May 27, 2014

One of the nice things about eating in The Gambia, is that the fish is very fresh. Most beach bars and restaurants have a small boat which they send out to catch fish. Oscars is another beach bar between Kotu Stream and Kololio.

    LAMIN LODGE: DELICIOUS DONUTS

    by alyf1961 Written Apr 19, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I visited Lamin lodge as part of a “4 in 1 day tour” with Arch-Tours. We stopped here for coffee and homemade donuts. The donuts were delicious. Sitting in a serene, open, wooden hut on the banks of the Gambia River, with the delicious smell of donuts and the wildlife of the river going about its daily routine in the Mangroves was very peaceful. It was a welcome escape from the busy Serrekunda market, where we had just been.

    Favorite Dish: Donuts were delicious.

JD'S: FREE WIFI AND GREAT FOOD

    by alyf1961 Written Apr 18, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I had spotted JD’s restaurant from the coach during my transfer from Banjul airport.
The restaurant is set in a large garden, with red and white tableclothed tables set out in the garden.
I went there on my first day for dinner and it became my favourite restaurant.
I had the beef Domada, a local dish made with a peanut sauce. It was DELICIOUS!!!!
The food in The Gambia is so cheap, the cost for beef Domada with chips and salad and a bottle of Coke was 330 Dalasis (just less than £5.50)
I went a couple of more times during my stay. I had taken my laptop with me, the WiFi was free.

Favorite Dish: Domada, a delicious sauce made from ground peanuts.

Luigi's: a feel of the mediterranean

    by alyf1961 Updated Apr 18, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Luigi’s is a very nice, white mediterranean feel, restaurant in Kololi. The day I visited it was very quiet, I ordered a latte and a plate of chips, both of which were delicious. I sat outside and watched people walking by. A lizard ran up and down a tree in front of me.

The restaurant is part of a hotel complex.
it serves pizza, pasta, burgers and a range of desserts
open from 8am - 4pm for snacks, then open from 6pm - 11.30pm for dinner
They also have a take away menu

Favorite Dish: The latte was delicious

Darboe's: Try the local Gambian cuisine

by toonsarah Written Mar 2, 2014

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Although we often ate in our hotel in Fajara, we wanted to sample other restaurants too and ventured out on several occasions. One of these was to Kololi where we discovered Darboe's, just off the Senegambia Strip. We ate on the outside terrace (there are only a handful of table inside and this is by far the more attractive option) and decided to try some local Gambian cuisine, though standard international dishes were also available (steaks, seafood, pasta etc).

Favorite Dish: We asked the waiter to describe the dishes and both opted for the style known as benechin, in which meat, fish or vegetables are cooked in a red sauce and served with rice which is also red (I believe tomatoes account for the colour). Chris chose a chicken one and I asked for vegetable, foolishly forgetting to ask what vegetables are included. When it arrived I was taken aback to find the dish full of peas, which I really really don't like! Luckily I was able to find quite a few other vegetables in there too but it wasn't the best choice to have made. The sauce though was good, and Chris liked his chicken version.

Prices here are very reasonable. The bill for the two main courses, a shared starter of cheesy garlic bread (very nice) and two beers was 780D (about £12.50).

Come Inn Bar and Restaurant: Great food and ambiance

by aprox Updated Feb 4, 2012

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The main tourism area with many bars, restaurants and night clubs. Most have some sort of happy hour but in general on that strip, prices are salty.

My choice is Come Inn Bar and Restaurant in Kololi, close by the tourism area, which offers great value for money. It offers a rich variety of European and African cuisine at moderate prices. Dishes are between 100 and 300 Dalasi (rate approx. 48 Dalasi per Pound lr 40 Dalasi per Euro, Jan 2012) and they have cold draft beer. There is a good variety of shrimp, fish, porc and beef dishes. Their fish and chips, steak and jacket potatoe, shrimp coctail are among my favourites.

The place is very clean, wide and airy, has a wonderful garden and a spacious, well stocked bar.

For sport fans there is two large screen TVs where they show football, mainly premier league and championship cups as well as the Formular 1 car race. Special programs might be tuned upon request. Regularly the fan comunitys (local and tourists) are gathering to watch the important matches.

Favorite Dish: Shrimp coctail and dishes as well as fish dishes, because they are made from fresh local shrimp and fish. The steak is great, because it is grilled exactly to my liking and it is tender. The African dishes (Domoda, Yassa) are also available and cooked with high quality ingredients.

Stella Artois: Belgian Beer in Banjul

by Wafro Written Oct 30, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

So far from home and there it is! One of Belgium’s’ best beers in the refrigerator of Lebanese businessman. It is very expensive to drink imported beers, so expect to pay almost 2.5€ for a can of Stella.

Kuto Point: Real chilled place on the beach

by Splixa Updated Aug 1, 2010

Family owned restaurant on the beach. Friendly athmosphere and so quiet. Noone tries to sell you something and you can relax in the sunbeds to easy African music (sometimes some live drumming) and take a dip in the ocean in front of you... Simply wonderful.

    Jojo's: Lovely ambience

    by johndavid1988 Written Jul 15, 2010

Live music whilst sitting outdoors, correct waiter service and nice food. The owner Jojo is lovely and creates a good atmosphere. We had to wait a bit longer then usual for our food to arrive but that did not mind us. Wine was good, but expensive. Food was more expensive then in other restaurants but for that one night we did not mind.

Favorite Dish: We had the special of the day

    Butcher Shop: dissapointing

    by johndavid1988 Written Jul 15, 2010

Lovely setting and it came recommened so we went there for lunch. Service was not of good standard, especially if you compare it with the prices they charge you. We ordered and after 5 minutes they came and tell us our choice was not available - can happen. After our second order they came back again with the same message - so in the end we just ordered a steak sandwich and a cheese sandwich. Steak was hard and was too spicy and way to much onion. We did not like this place and after our complaints we were offered a free coffee......which ended up on the bill in the end. So just paid and left. Never again.

great indian restaurant - waiters are very friendly. Service a bit slow but that did not really matter as the food was just great. Nice selection and also option to sit inside or outside. We saw many Indians eat there so we figured the food would be good. It was.

Denmark restaurant: the name is a bit misleading

Alaeldin Restaurant: Needs to be discovered

By chance we found this place, which is on Kairaba Avenue in Fajara. Butchery, Mini market and restaurant. We loved the food which was basic but tasty. Great view on what was all happening on the road, people visiting the mini market and the butchery. For a quick lunch or a cheap bite at night - the excellent choice.

Favorite Dish: Selection of lebanese dishes and grills.

El Sol - Mexican Cuisine and Beyond: The best food ever!

    by johndavid1988 Written Jul 13, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We found this restaurant on tripadvisor as rated one of the best and it is sooo true. This is just the best restaurant. Great decor, fantastic service, friendly owners, fantastic food and cocktails and great value for money - what more do you want?

We sat outdoors and it was perfect, comfortable chairs - great linnen and a fantastic welcome by the owners. The service was efficient and friendly, we had difficulties making up our mind what to choose, so after our first visit we returned 2 more times. Every time it was just perfect. Try the Carne El Sol, the Apple Mojito, the pescado Mexicana and please don't forget the steamed chocolate pudding. That is to die for....and you know what was also fantastic - they serve a decent espresso (Nespresso!)

Favorite Dish: All the food is just lovely but the Carne El Sol is just the best. Great fillet steak, marinated and then they pour flaming tequilla over it on your table. Great portion and therefor excellent value for money.
