Back to school

by johnsteel1967

Gambia does not have much in the way of resources. When visiting perhaps take along some pens, books, paper etc to give to a scholl local to where you are staying. We visited the school of one of the hotel receptionists and were made very welcome.

Visit to Banjul, the museum and the market.

by sachara

Banjul is the capital of Gambia. Banjul is situated on the original St Mary Island in the Gambia river and can only be reached by crossing the Oyster Creek at the Danton bridge. In Banjul we visited the National Museum. In the museum you have a good overview of the development of Gambia with many old pictures and artifacts. To read all the descriptions will take some time. There is also a lot of information about the daily life of the different tribes and about the significance of music and dance for the gambian people. After the visit to the museum we went to the Albert Market.

Overnight in Georgetown

by David&Pauline

It's really worthwhile taking one of the overnight tours to Georgetown if only to experience the dreadful state of the roads. You'll get to see the Wassau stone circles that have that Stonehenge like mystic strangeness. In Georgetown you'll get another reminder of the brutal slave trade and the awful conditions we kept our fellow humans in.

Visit the crocodile farm and shake hands with charlie the crocdile (see picture)It was the scariest thing I have ever done - i expected Charlie to be slimy be it felt like stroking a tree! Also at the farm there is a water area where Gambian women struggling to become pregnant can bathe and it is suppoosed to enhance their chances of becoming pregnant

Visiting a school.

by dedeckerm.

One of 'things' that you can visit is a school. When you visit a school gifts are always welcome, like pens, papers, books, wristles and so on...or a little gift like money. They can used it and they need it !

JUFFURE

by jill_archer

JUFFURE Alex Haley, author of ‘Roots’ traced his ancestry back to this village. Kunta Kinta was alleged to have been abducted from here and sold into slavery in America.

James Island

by jill_archer

James Island</fontIt was captured by the British in 1661, who named it James Island after the heir to the British Throne. They set up the Royal Adventurers of England Trading into Africa company and began business with the Mandinkas trading in gold, ivory, spices, peppers and slaves to be shipped to the west Indies. The ruin stands on a tiny island in the centre of the river. Fort James is a reminder of the centuries of struggle to dominate the slave, and other, trades of the region.
