Vultures.Larger birds like the kites and vultures are common, but it might not be so easy to catch a glimpse of the rare harrier eagle, or osprey, a goshawk, or the lizard buzzard.

I told you about the jungle and excursions by boat.Try it!The people are very friendly to you if you don't dolike a fat, lazy, rich touris. So,whenthey find that you are a nic tourist, you are a new Livingstone and the secrets of the jungle will come to you.Beautiful crocodiles, birds, insects.Old houses made of clay. The unique african culture. When you are sitting in a jeep and you drive in a village, children will run after you for presents.give them a ballpoint or chocolates, otherwise they and their moms will look angrily to you!
Francis arranged for me to go on a number of excursions. One of the was a champagne boat trip around the coastal waters! Pretty good it was too!It was great to meet new people to talk to about their experience of The Gambia. I felt lucky though to be staying with friends though, as everything was more real and personal.
First of all go upriver, and the best way to do this is on-board the nice ship m/s BEATRICE,she goes upriver at least twice a month with departure in Banjul and makes a stop in Tendaba,Bambale and Kaur before the old slave station Georgetown on Mac Cartys Island from where she returns to Banjul. You can also go by safaritrucks one day trip and visit a Gambian school and a typical Mandinka village it´s a very nic trip if you like to trawell in group but if you prefare to trawell alone it´s easy to hire a taxi with driver for the whole day and do the same by your self.Your chances to meet croccodiles, hippos, monkeys and lot of birds are big.The trip takes about three days with confortable cabins exelent food and very nice crew under supervising of Swedish captain.Another trip with this ship is a oneday trip called THE ROOT´S and you start in Banjul then first stop is in Albredajust a few...

Get out and see a bit of the world. We went on the ferry over to the north bank of the river. We looked around an old fort which had loads of lizards but nothing else. We then picked up a taxi (and a few local boys) bought some fish on a string and fed them to a crocodile in a sacred pool. Unlike most Gambian crocodiles this one was very much alive.Doing something using our own resources. Who wants to be herded around with a load of other tourists ?
One of the local drinks in the Gambia is palm juice, made from the juice in a plam tree. Bottles are out at the top of palm trees to drain the juice and then some poor person (as pictured here) has to go and get the full bottle. There is also an alcoholic version where the juice is fermented called Fire Water - very potentIt is amazing to watch people scurry up and down the palm trees with a little bit of bent wood keeping them from falling down

The Gambia offers some fabulous fishing both salt water and freshwater try your hand fishing for Barracuda in the Atlantic or go up river for the Tiger Fish

Monkey park in Kololi - great walk through the bush with loads of monkeys!

At the Kombo Beach there is a rental office from Avis. Reasonable prices and good cars. We used our 4WD to explore the Kombo's and especially Gunjur region.
