Bird Watching

by Pete.Gibson

Bird watching in the Gambia is excellent so even if you have no knowledge a visit to the abuko nature reserve is a must, you must visit the hide which overlooks the croc pool, and there is a bird identification area with pictures and details

Christmas in The Gambia

by Pete.Gibson

Why not consider spending this Christmas in The Gambia, Santa arrived by boat and we spent the morning sunbathing around the pool, but hotels make a big effort to make Christmas a special occasion with Christmas dinner with all the trimmings

Golf African style

by Pete.Gibson

Even if you havent played golf you will find this a unique experience, the Greens are actually sand soaked in oil and rolled flat with a roller before each shot, you aslo get a local caddie who is extremely good at finding your lost ball, If you are a golfer dont expect to play to you handicap

Albreda village is such a charming little village, the people here a lovely, and there is a great batik shop that sells some of the best batik in the country, there is also a very small museum nearby, which details the slave trade in The Gambia.

Abuko Nature Reserve is a great reserve, it shows a lot of animals in their natural habitat, but has also created a natural environment for animals that are not native ie. lions, it is a nice walk around and a pleasent way to spend the day.

Basse Santa Su in the far east

by sachara

Basse Santa Su was the most eastern town we visited in Gambia. From here we headed south to the Senegalese border. In Basse there is also a ferry to the north bank of the Gambia River. In fact it is the last major ferry-crossing point in the far east of the country.Basse is a busy and noisy town with lots of people along the road. Also a lot of Senegalese people are passing through this town.

Mum's pride

by sachara

In Gambia family life and children are very important. When we visited the compound near Nema, this woman showed us her kid and asked me to make a picture of her together with her kid.It was a pity we didn't speak the same language, so we had to talk with hands and gestures.

The pride of the compound

by sachara

When we walked around in the compound near Nema, the family was very proud to bring us to the place in the compound where they kept their cow. This man told us, that this cow was a very precious property for the family. And he asked us to make a picture of him with this cow.

Compound near Nema

by sachara

On our way back from Wassu to Georgetown we were invited in a traditional compound near Nema. It was very interesting to have a close look at how the people live in this compound. The round huts in the compound were built in the traditional way with local natural materials. The walls were made of mud and the huts have thatched roofs.

Georgetown, on Mc Cartney Island

by sachara

Georgetown was in the colonial time an important administrative centre. Georgetown was in these past the second British settlement. Now is Georgetown -with 3.000 inhabitants- tranquil with a very pleasant atmosphere and not many tourists around.Georgetown is situated on the norther edge of Mc Cartney Island. You have to take the ferry-boat to go there.
