    Kololi Warnings and Dangers

The only reason we came to The Gambia is because of the great weather in December (we were there in 2009). And it stayed the only reason one should ever have to go there. As soon as we left the resort, close to the beach, one person after the other comes at you, wanting to be your friend (later asking for money), sell you something, offering trips,...

  • Pickpockets at the ferry

    Kololi Warnings and Dangers

We made the Banjul-Barra ferry crossing four times in total. Three times were completely trouble free but once we attempted to make the crossing on the first ferry of the morning of Milad an-Nabi and it was chaos! This particular crossing was part of a group tour to Janjang Burreh. We started our journey as a group of thirteen, but we became twelve...

  • Evening paddle among the mangroves

    Brikama Things to Do

On one of our days at Mandina we had a late afternoon / early evening boat ride with Amadou, paddling along the mangrove-edged waters in search of bird life and just generally relaxing in the cooling air.We passed some fishermen near a village, casting their nets in the traditional way, and some women returning from a day spent collecting oysters...

  • Makasutu Cultural Forest

    Brikama Favorites

Makasutu means “sacred forest” in Mandinka. This 500 hectare reserve was founded by two British men, James English and Lawrence Williams, who had a passion for The Gambia and wanted to help to preserve its wildlife and natural environment. They gradually bought this area of land and restored it to its natural state. It encompasses five different...

  • The journey to Makasutu

    Brikama Transportation

We came to Mandina in a minibus which picked up us and three other guests at the coastal hotels. Our luggage was piled on the roof and we set off, soon leaving the more touristy strip behind and driving through dusty markets and local villages. We turned off this busy road on to the track to Mandina and immediately saw why everyone comments on this...

  • Fishing village

    Bakau Things to Do

Bakau fishing village is in the heart of the town and is a wonderful bustle of activity when the long fishing pirogues come in. There are loads of cheap Bonga Fish which is made in to local fishballs. There are the ugliest fish in the market, the butter fish, which when skinned and filletted make a fabulous dish, rather like monk fish tails. You...

Just on the edge of Gunjur fishing village you can find another Rastafarian retreat, Kaira Kunda. Gunjur Restaurants

Gunjur beach has two beach bars, Hopeside Corner has great potential but little trade. You’ll need to order your drinks and food in the morning, so the boys can run into the village to get your needs. This includes fresh palm wine and our new favourite tipple, cana. The boys are hoping to have a couple of rooms to rent soon, in the meantime you’re...

  • Take a tour with Habib

    Fajara Favorites

As an alternative to doing the holiday company's excursions I would recommend booking a trip or two with a good local guide. One of the best, judging by the many plaudits he gets, is Habib. He can be booked through the reception at Ngala Lodge or via the contact details below, and offers a range of half-day and whole day trips. Although we did one...

  • Out and about

    Fajara Things to Do

You could spend all your time in your hotel and its grounds, especially one as lovely as Ngala Lodge, but to do so would mean missing much of what the Gambia has to offer in terms of wonderful wildlife, interesting history and friendly people. You can easily book excursions through your tour company, hire one of the local official tourist guides...

  • On the beach

    Fajara Things to Do

The beach at Ngala is fairly small and is almost completely covered at high tide, although the hotel has thoughtfully built a substantial decking area at the foot of the cliffs that allows you to sunbathe, or rest in the shade of a day bed, close to the sea at all times. When the sea does go out you find a pretty cove, scattered with some rocks and...

  • The heat of the sun

    Lamin Island Warnings and Dangers

Because you are setting out in the dark, leaving the hotel at six in the morning, you may not think of bringing the essentials such as sun tan lotion and a hat. It got very hot and thristy once the sun came out, and walking around the vegetable gardens we got rather dehydrated as we didn't think about taking water with us.

  • Dug-out canoe

    Lamin Island Transportation

To ferry the tourists around the mangrove and around the mud flats, a small dug out canoe is used, very flexible for manouvering around shallow waters. Be careful not to move to rapidly in it though, as it is not very steady!

    Kotu Transportation

Local bus is by far the cheapest way but they dont come by Kotu, you need to go into Serekunda, by taxi, in which case its usually easier to go back taxi all the way if going local (around the coast area).Kotu to Senegambia is 50D.From the airport to Kotu, 400D. takes about 30mins, 45min to banjul.I had a friend in Senekunda who had a driver who...

    Kotu Tourist Traps

Whilst the locals are incredibly friendly on the 'smiling coast' (as they call it or its been branded), shaking your hand at every opportunity and asking your details, 90% of the time, they are trying to sell you something.Ive been to far pushier places and at least these people are polite and at the end of the day they are trying to make a living...
