The festival takes place evry year in late August or early September. Only unmarried girls without kids can participate. The aims of this massive ceremony are to:1. Preserve giris' chastity2. Provide tribute labour for the Queen Mother3. Produce solidarity by working togetherAt the end of the Ceremony the king is allowed to pick one of the maidens to be one (of his many) wives. The current King, Mswati III, choose a 16 year old girl in 2004 to be wife number 12. Each wife gets their own house, servants and a BMW. Girls do not have to attend the ceremony, but getting married to the King is a sever possibility. He is a total Monarch and can do as he pleases. One of the few absolute royal rulers in the world left. Please have another look...

ETHIOPIA, Gondar

by sachara

Gondar is attractive because of its churches and castles. Gondar became the residence of emperor Fasilades and his successors and capital of the country, starting in 1636, for the next 200 years. The Gonderine period is one of the most colourful ones of Ethiopia's history. Gondar is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress city of Fasil Ghebby, the Royal Enclosure, is surrounded by a impressive wall of 900 M long. The enclosed area of about 75.000 sq Ms contains the recent restored Fasilades Palace, the Palace of Iyasu, the library, the chancellary, remains of a bathing pool, a lions house and more. The buildings have Hindu and Arab influences, but you can also recognize the Baroque style, brought to Gondar by the Jesuit missionaires. For more information and pictures have a look at my Ethiopia and Gondar page.

ETHIOPIA, Simien National Park

by sachara

The massive erosion over the years on the Ethiopian plateau has created one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. The dramatic landscape of the Simien Mountains is consisting of several plateaus separated by wide valleys. The jagged peaks, the deep valleys, the steep escarpments of about 1500 M, the views at the pinnacles make the landscape breathtaking. There are good views at the mountains, going north from Debark to Aksum. The Simien National Park of 179 sq KM lies at a height from 1900 to 4500 M. The park can be entered form Debark. Here you can also buy the tickets at the park's headquarters. The Simien Park is home to some extremely rare animals like the Gelada (bleeding heart) Baboons, the Simien Fox and the Walia Ibex, a goat found nowhere else. During my visit I saw huge groups of the baboons with the unique red breast. The Simien Mountains are an UNESCO World Heritage...

ETHIOPIA, Lalibela rock-hewn churches

by sachara

In the heart of Ethiopia at a height of 2630 M in the rugged Lasta mountains, Lalibela, the ''new Jerusalem'' on African soil, is founded by king Lalibela in the 13th century. The former name was Roha, but after the death of King Lalibela the town was renamed. In and around Lalibela eleven medieval monolithic were built under groundlevel. One of the most striking and known examples is the cross-shaped Bet Giyorgis. Still today Lalibela is an important place of Ethiopian Christianity and visited by several pilgrims. In 1978 Lalibela is also declared to be an UNESCO World Heritage Site. For more information, have a look at my Ethiopia and Lalibela page.

EGYPT, Nubian Monuments

by sachara

Recently the interesting Nubia museum in Aswan is opened. Aswan is not only a nice city to visit because of its wonderful scenery of the islands in the Nile, but the city is also a good base to visit the magnificent ancient Nubian monuments as the Temple of Ramses II in Abu Simbel and the Sanctuary of Isis at Phylae. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Both temples are saved from the rising waters of the Nile caused by the construction of the High Dam. Thanks to an international campaign, launched by the UNESCO the temples were removed and reconstructed at a higher place.Abu Simbel in the far south can be visited by plane or road. Phylae, now situated at the Agiliki island, 550 M from the original site, can be visited by boat. For more information and pictures, have a look at my Aswan page.

EGYPT, Luxor & ancient Thebes

by sachara

Thebes, the city of god Amon, was the ancient capital of Egypt during the Middle and New Kingdom. In 1979 Thebes and its necropolis is declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nowadays Luxor is called the worlds greatest open air museum with a huge number of monuments. In fact there are three areas of great importance, the city of Luxor with the Luxor temple at the eastbank of the Nile, the town of Karnak just north of Luxor with the Karnak temple and the necropolis of Thebes at the westbank, which the ancient Egyptians called Waset.I visited the westbank three times. I especially enjoyed to go there by bike, allthough it can be extremely hot. There are a lot of important monuments like the Colossi of Memnon, Medinet Habu, the Ramesseum, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Valleys of the Nobles, Kings and Queens, The tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens is the most beautiful one you...

EGYPT, Memphis, ancient capital

by sachara

Memphis, founded in 3100 BC, was once the glorious capital of the Old Kingdom of Egypt. In ancient times it was considered as one of the seven wonders of the world. In recent times (1979) Memphis is declared UNESCO World Heritage Site and you still can visit several extraordinary monuments. The three pyramids of Giza near Cairo are the most known. The Sfinx, an unique monolith monument, became the icon of Egypt. Other places are less known, like Mit Rahina, Dahshur and Abuar. One of the most interesting sites to visit is Saqqara. Its towns, temples and pyramids are of great archaeological, architectural, artistic, cultural and religious importance. The Zoser step pyramid is the most known structure of Saqqara. I visited Saqqara two times and didn't still see all the site has to offer. For more pictures and information about Giza, Memphis and Saqqara have a look at my Cairo page.

EGYPT, Cairo, city with a soul

by sachara

The more often I visited Cairo, the more I started to love this city. The city has so much to offer and strolling around, there are so many different areas to discover.Islamic Cairo is declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. About 600 Islamic and archaeological monuments are scattered in the modern residential areas. Old Cairo or Al-Fustat is founded in the 10th century and became the new centre of the Islamic world, reaching its golden age in the 14th century. Walking in the areas around Khan el Khalily and the citadel, it lookes like nothing has changed for centuries. There are mosques, medresses, hammans, medieval decorated facades, wooden bay windows, arches, fountains and old bazaars. The only way to experience this unique and unchanged atmosphere is to walk around for at least some hours or days and don't take only the main route and shopping streets, but also the small...
