CABO VERDE, 15 islands in the Atlantic

by sachara

Cabo Verde has 15 islands in the Atlantic. Every island has its own character. We visited Ilha do Sal, Sao Vicente, Santo Antao and Santiago.Ilha do Sal is rather flat and looks like a desert. In Santa Maria at the south coast are a lot of international hotels along the beaches, but the town itself has still a rather authentic Capeverdian atnmosphere.Sao Vicente and Santo Antao are very mountaineous. Especially the scenery of Santo Antao with rough gorges, green valleys with terraces is gorgeous. It's an excellent island for hiking. There are good hiking maps, but bring them from home.Santiago is the most African island. Here you will find mountains, fairytale beaches with palmtrees and lively markets. The people of Cabo Verde is very friendly and hospitable. We liked the blend of African, Portuguese and Brazilian culture and atmosphere. At night we enjoyed the live-music in the...

CAMEROON, Rhumsiki

by sachara

In the north of Cameroon Rhumsiki is a wonderful destination, because around this village you see the many striking peaks of the Kapsiki mountainrange. The peaks are named after the nearest village. So the peak in front of Rhumsiki is the Rhumsiki Peak. You can make wonderful hikes of one or more days, visiting the traditonal villages around Rhumsiki and walking between the peaks. In the Rhumsiki you can visit the crabman, who can predict your future, looking in which way the crab moves. You can combine your visit to Rhumsiki with a visit to the Waza National Park, 220 KM north-east of Rhumsiki. For more pictures and information, have a look at Cameroon page.

BURKINA FASO, Ouagadougou

by sachara

Burkina Faso and its capital Ouagadougou are very relaxed and easygoing. I crossed the country during my trip in West Africa in 1989, coming from Togo and travelling to Mali. I liked the three major colours of the landscape, the yellow of the dry grass, the green of the trees and the red of the dusty roads. Also the huge baobab trees with their particular shapes were very fascinating. In Ouagadougou I walked in the area south of the big market, looked at the huge bicycle market, chatted with the people, tried to win the match the Netherlands-Burkina Faso, playing against the best table-football-team of the street. Ouaga was a nice place to buy souvenirs, to eat some cakes in the pastellaria, to go to the bank and post-office after some days in the bush. For more pictures and information have a look at my Burkina Faso page.

BOTSWANA, Okavanga Delta

by sachara

Okavanga ''the river, which never finds the sea'' is the most famous part of Botswana. The 1300 Km long Okavanga river ends into a 15.000 square KM maze of lagoons, canals and islands. From sandy and hot Maun we reached the Inner Delta in a 20 minutes flight. It's a very spectacular way, to go to the delta by air, having such a great overview over the amazing landscape below.A ''must do'' is making a mokoro trip in the beautiful scenery of the inner delta. Less than 1 m about the waterlevel, you will have another perspective of the lagoon, canals and waterplants. Be aware of the burning sun and the hippos. At the Chief's Island you can do a walking safari. We didn't see many animals during our walk, but had a lot of elephants at and around our campsite. For more pictures and information about the Okavanga Delta, the Moremi Wildlife Reserve and the Chobe National Park, have a look at my...

BENIN, Ganvie, living on wooden stilts

by sachara

One of the highlights of Benin is the fishing village Ganvie, built on stilts in a lagoon north of Cotonou. For the 8 KM ride to Ganvie you can hire a roofed motorboat or a piroque from the launching point of Abomey Calavi. Ganvie is established in the 18th century by the Tofino people, trying to escape from the Fon people and the Dahomey Kingdoms from the north, who were not allowed to attack people on the water. So the Tofino people built their houses 2 M above the waterlevel in the swampy lake. Also nowadays this fish breeding community still lives on the water. All the transport is by boat. Even young kids can allready handle a pirogue. In the centre of the village is a floating market. For more pictures and information about Ganvie and other places in Benin have a look at my Benin page.

ALGERIA, the five towns of the M'Zab

by sachara

Ghardaia is a cluster of five settlements deep inside the Algerian desert. These settlements, Ghardaia, Melilla, Beni Isguen, Bou Noura and El Ateuf, are founded in the 11th century by the Mozabites, atop high pinnacles, dominating the M'zab Valley. These traditional human habitat has been preserved intact and is perfectly adapted to its environment. In 1982 this pentapolis is declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.We visited all 5 towns and liked to walk up in the narrow streets between the white stone houses on the five hills, each crowned with a lone towering minaret. As urban planner and landscape-architect I really admired the way the city blends completely in the landscape, taking advantage of the site. For more pictures and information have a look at my Algerian Wilaya de Ghardaia page. For more Algerian desert towns you can have a look at my El Golea and Timimoun pages.

ALGERIA, Tassili n' Ajjer

by sachara

Approaching Djanet by plane, while descending, I saw the most surrealist and lunar landscape ever. I could hardly imagine, that this was the area, where I would travel for the next 14 days. Tassili N' Ajjer National Park is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can find the most important groupings of prehistoric rock art of the world. There are more than 15.000 drawings and engravings from 6000 BC to the first centuries of the present era. Looking at the the images, you see a huge part of the history of human life, the climate changes and animal migrations in this area. The landscape is of great geological interest. Its formations were the most scenic I ever saw. The eroded sandstone looked like forests of rock. It was breathtaking to travel and sleep in the middle of this. For more information and pictures have a look at my Djanet page and my other Algerian pages.

He says Ghana has not achieved the dreams of 1957."Perhaps it is an endless journey to pursue the dreams of people," he explains. * Click for a map of GHANA

HAGGLE HAGGLE HAGGLE

by DAO

As you are walking any of the main tourist areas, a young boy will come up to you and invite you to his Uncle’s carpet shop with promises of a good price. Once you are led through anonymous alleyways you will enter a large cavernous room full of an incredible amount of carpets from floor to ceiling. Your young guide will have vanished, as he has now earned his small commission. And now the show begins! If you really want to buy a carpet, you need an amazing amount of intestinal fortitude. Sellers always seem to start at $1000 and tell you all about how the carpet was made. Just to make you feel guilty, they will open and display 50-60 carpets for your perusal. You can buy a good, large carpet for $50-100, but probably not in large tourist infested cities. I have seen some absurd opening prices from sellers for things like bags of tea starting at $30 that locals can buy for 1-2 u.s....
