SENEGAL Niokolo Koba National Park

by sachara

The Niokolo Koba National Park is Senegal's major park and covers about 900.000 hectares. The park is located in a well-watered area along the banks of the Gambia river and two major tributaries. The park is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The forests and savannahs of Niokolo-Koba National Park have a very rich fauna of 330 species of mammals, like the giant derby elands, the largest one of the antelopes, waterbucks, bushbucks, baboons, monkeys, lions, leopards, as well as 36 species of reptiles and 20 species of amphibians. The best times for viewing animals are from the end of October to the end of June. We visited the park in november 2004. We found out that the orginal elephant population was disappeared. We heard that a new herd of elephants was been brought to the park. In the park they told us, there was not yet any new elephant arrived, allthough it was arranged, that 70 elephants...

NIGERIA, a discovery

by sachara

In January 2004 I crossed Nigeria, coming from Benin and going to Cameroon and Chad. Nigeria was the real discovery of my trip, because of the beautiful, friendly and proud people, I met everywhere in the country. They were always waving at us and welcoming us, sometimes even singing and dancing, when our truck crossed their towns and villages.Nigeria is a rather unknown country with a bad reputation because of safety reasons and corruption. We luckily didn't encounter any problem, we could even pass roadblocks without paying any money. We visited Abeokuta, known of its sacred Olumu rock, Abuja, the new built capital of Nigeria and Jos with its nice cooler climate. Jos has a fantastic "Museum of Traditional Nigerian Architecture", where you can see full-scale reproductions of all kind of buildings from many regions of Nigeria. So you can see the Kano Wall, the Palace of the Emir of...

MOROCCO: Essaouira

by sachara

Essaouira, as "an outstanding and well preserved example of a late-18th-century fortified seaport town", is an UNESCO world heritage stie. "The town is built according to the principles of contemporary European military architecture translated to a North African context. Since its foundation, it has been a major international trading seaport, linking Morocco and its Saharan hinterland with Europe and the rest of the world."The Skala de la Ville is the most striking part of the ramparts of Essaouira's walled medina, situated above the rocks and the sea. From here you have a breathtaking view at the ocean, the cliffs and the waves. It's not only nice to walk along these ramparts, but also to stroll in the narrow alleyways of the medina, in the suqs and the harbour.Look also at my Essaouira page.

MOROCCO, Ait Ben Haddou

by sachara

Ait Ben Haddou, kashbah of the stars, is one of the most famous kashbahs of the Atlas Region. Much is rebuilt and restored, because the kashbah deserved many times as decor for movies like "Lawrence of Arabia". I disvovered this kashbah first at my fifth visit to Morocco. The Kashbah is nowadays an UNESCO World Heritage Site as ''striking example of the architecture of South Morocco''The kashbah or ksar is a wonderfully looking fortified town, surrounded by high walls, reinforced by corner towers. The earthen houses crowd together within these walls. I loved it, to walk in the narrow alleys of the town with its unique atmosphere. For more pictures and information have a look at my Ait Ben Haddou page.

MOROCCO, Marrakesh

by sachara

Marrakesh is the most amazing and exotic town I visited in Morocco. In 1975 I visited this town for the first time. I loved to stroll around in the souqs and at the Djemaa el Fna with its spectacle of streetvendors, musicians, snake charmers and acrobats. After 25 years I came back and felt the same enchanting atmosphere in the medina, the souqs and at the world famous square, Djemaa el Fna.Marrakesh is founded in 1070 and was an important political, economical and cultural centre for a long period. It has several impressive monuments, dating from that period: the Koutoubia mosque, the kashbah, the battlements. Other architectural jewels from later periods include the Bandia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrassa and the Saadian Tombs. So it's no wonder, that Marrakesh is on the list of the World Heritage Sites. For more information and pictures, have a look at my Marrakesh page.

NAMIBIA, Welwitschia mirabilis

by sachara

The Naukluft-Namib Park in Namibia (covering 4.976.800 ha) is the largest game reserve in Africa. From Swakopmund with its German colonial atmosphere you can easily reach the gravel plains and rugged Kuiseb Canyon in the Namib section of the park. In the south section of the park are the rugged Naukluft Mountains with the spectacular Dunes of Sossusvlei, sharply contrasting with the gravel plains in the north. The Namib is one of the most fascinating places on earth and home to a wide variety of desert-adapted plants and animals that are not found elsewhere in the world. From Swakopmund you can follow the 140 KM Welwitschia drive, a self-guided route featuring the geology, fauna and flora of the Namib. The most interesting botanical curiosity of the Namib is the Welwitschia mirabilis. This plant has characteristics of flowering and cone-bearing plants, but it is classified as Gymnosperm,...

NAMIBIA, Fish River Canyon

by sachara

The Fish River Canyon in the south of Namibia is the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the USA. From the several viewpoints along the edge you have breathtaking views at the canyon with its depth up to 550 M, width up to 27 KM and length of 160 KM.At the most northern main viewpoint near Hobas you can start the 85 KM long backpacking trail to Ai-Ais of about 5 days. At this trail you have to cope with soft sand, boulders and extremely high temperatures. That's why the trail is only open during wintertime, from May till October. You need a permit for this trail. Reservations can be made at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, far before you intend to start your hike.I only descended a bit the stairs at the starting point of the trail. More south we descended by bus to the bottom of the canyon, passing a lunar landscape, for a visit to the Ai-Ais hot springs....

MOZAMBIQUE, corridor route

by sachara

In 1994 we crossed Mozambique by the corridor route, travelling from Blantyre in Malawi to Harare in Zimbabwe. The distance in Mozambique we had to drive was 200 KM. Travelling by public transport, we didn't have the opportunity to stop and look around. So what we could see of Mozambique was through the windows of the bus and at the borders. A each border we needed three hours for the formalities. When we had to cross the river Mazao, the road was blocked, because they decided to rig a wrecked truck out of the river just at that day. So we were lucky to have the possibility to come out of bus and to look around for a while. For more stories about this trip have a look at my Mozambique page.

MOROCCO, Fez

by sachara

Fez was the first Moroccan city I visited in 1975 and I was overwhelmed by everything, the huge walls of old Fez, the decorated buildings, the souqs, the atmosphere.Fez is the oldest of the Moroccon imperial cities. I enjoyed to see the Royal Palace, the mosques and babs, the gates to the medina. The blue faience at the outside is said to be represent Fez, while the green at the inside represents the Islam.Fez is founded in the 9th century and is home to the oldest university of the world. Fez reached its height in the 13th and 14th centuries. The principal monuments in the medina, the madrases, fondouks, palaces, residences, mosques and fountains date from this period. After the capital of Morocco is transferred to Rabat in 1912, Fez has retained its status as the country's cultural and spiritual centre. Fez is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. For more information and pictures have a look...

MAURITIUS, island in the Indian Ocean

by sachara

Mauritius, being a small independent country in the Indian ocean, has a mixture of different cultures like Indian, African and French. When I came I didnt now much about Mauritius, but in the museum in the capital Port Louis I found out that the originally uninhibited island is discovered by the Dutch and is named after the Dutch Prince Maurits. After the island was abandoned by the Dutch, the French took over and later the English. In 2006 the Aapravasi Ghat in the district of Port Louis became an UNESCO world heritage site, being the place where the modern labour diaspora began: "In 1834, the British Government selected Mauritius to be the first site for what it called "the great experiment" in the use of "free" labour to replace slaves. Between 1834 and 1920, almost half a million indentured labourers arrived from India to work in the sugar plantations of Mauritius, or to be...
