GHANA, forts and castles
At the coast of Ghana are still remains of the trading forts, erected between 1482 and 1786. The forts were built and occupied by the European traders and adventurers from Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Holland, Germany and Britain to safeguard the trading posts. The forts changed hands on numerous occasions. Some forts are restored and have a variety of uses. Some forts are ruins. Most are accessible for the public. They are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.The most impressive fort is the Castle of Cape Coast. In 1980 it was the first slave trade fort I visited. Underground are dark dungeons, from where for slaves no escape was possible. There was only one way out, to the sea, to the ships for deportation. It's shocking to stand there and try to imagine....Upstairs in the fresh air again there is a nice courtyard with a good view at the beach and the fishermen boats.
