KENYA, wildlife

by sachara

The abundant wildlife in Kenya makes that game-viewing in the national parks is one of the main attractions for visiting this country. Kenya's national parks and game reserves are of the best in Africa. All of the big five (lion, buffalo, elephant, rhino and leopard) can be seen in Kenya, but also many other mammals and birds.I visited Kenya three times and visited several parks. Each park has its own character and natural beauty. Except protecting wildlife, some parks have been created to preserve the landscape itself. In the visited parks I experienced the following as the most striking: Mount ElgonNP: landscape & cave elephantsKakamega Forest: rainforest, birds, monkeys & tea plantationsLake Bogoria National Reserve& Lake Baringo: hot springs, geysers, flamingo's & hipposSamburu National Reserve: elephants, lions & landscape Marsabit NP: landscape with huge cratersLake Nakuru NP:...

LIBYA, Leptis Magna

by sachara

Leptis Magna, as one of the most important Roman ports in Africa, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site "being one of the most beautiful cities of the Roman Empire, with its imposing public monuments, harbour, market-place, storehouses, shops and residential districts.''We visited Leptis Magna for a full day and still didn't succeed to see everything. Our guide who accompanied us during our trip in 2006 was an archaeologist working in Leptis Magna. He was very proud to show us 'his' Leptis Magna at the end of our trip en we felt lucky to have him with us able to tell us all about every detail at the site.Approaching the site you will see first the striking Severan Arch at the entrance of the city. Other interesting 'must sees' are the Hadrianic baths, the new and old forum, the market place, the theatre and -a bit east of the main site- the amphitheatre. Many parts of the site aren't yet...

GHANA, forts and castles

by sachara

At the coast of Ghana are still remains of the trading forts, erected between 1482 and 1786. The forts were built and occupied by the European traders and adventurers from Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Holland, Germany and Britain to safeguard the trading posts. The forts changed hands on numerous occasions. Some forts are restored and have a variety of uses. Some forts are ruins. Most are accessible for the public. They are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The most impressive fort is the Castle of Cape Coast. In 1980 it was the first slave trade fort I visited. Underground are dark dungeons, from where for slaves no escape was possible. There was only one way out, to the sea, to the ships for deportation. It's shocking to stand there and try to imagine....Upstairs in the fresh air again there is a nice courtyard with a good view at the beach and the fishermen boats. I was there at...

ETHIOPIA, Aksum

by sachara

Aksum is one of the most important attractions in Ethiopia. Once the Kingdom of Aksum was the most powerful state between the Eastern Roman Empire and Persia. The remains of the ancient city of Aksum, dating from between the 1th and 13th century AD, include giant stelae, monolithe obelisks, underground royal tombs, ruins of ancient castles and palaces. Still 98% of ancient Aksum is unexcavated. In the past the town was part of the Aksumite Kingdom. Now it's an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The northern Stelae Park with 120 stelae is the largest in Aksum. King Ezana's stele with its 24 M is the biggest standing one. Some Stelae, as this one, imitate multi-storeyed buildings with carved small windows and doors. For more information and pictures have a look at my Aksum page.

MALI: Timbuktu

by sachara

For many people in the world Timbuktu has an air of mystery. Many people think about this legendary city in Mali more as a mythical place than as a city with a real history. Timbuktu is often used as a metaphor for a remote and distant place beyond a person's experience.Timbuktu was founded around 1100 C.E. as a Tuareg nomad camp at a strategic place on the southernmost edge of the Sahara desert and about eight miles from the bend of the Niger River, gate to subsaharean Africa. From the thirteenth century, Timbuktu became a prosperous center of trade in Africa. The long distance trans-Saharan trade routes brought great wealth to the city. The geographical setting of the town made it a natural meeting point for people in West Africa, Berber and Arab people from the north and also traders from the Middle East and Europe. The wealth of the city attracted not only merchants and traders but...

EGYPT, Sinai & St Katherina's Monastery

by sachara

The Sinai peninsula is a wonderful world of rock and sand, of solitude and silence. In this magical world of barren mountains, sanddunes, deep wadis and colourful rocks lies the St Katherines Monastery. The rugged mountaineous landscape is a perfect backdrop to the monastery. This ancient monastery is founded in 330 AD by Helena, the mother of the Byzantine emperor Constantine. She was impressed by the sacredness of the place, where Moses saw the burning bush. The entire area is sacred to the three religions Christianity, Islam and Judaism. The monastery is the oldest monastery still in use for its initial function. The walls and buildings have great importance for studies of Byzantine architecture. In the monastery are some outstanding collections of early Christian manuscripts and icons. The monastery with its surrounding area is declared Unesco World Heritage site. The official UNESCO...

THE CRAZIEST ZOO IN AFRICA - BURUNDI

by DAO

You could call this place either completely crazy or even fun. Either way you will never see a zoo like this one. The Musée Vivant was once a full zoo before the civil war and many of its prized animals disappeared. It still has some interesting collections. When I arrived I was ushered in a by my friendly guide and the first building we came to contained fish tanks with no lights, making the fish very hard to see. There was also a large cage with Guinea Pigs inside. When I asked about the Guinea Pigs they explained they were there to feed the crocodiles and alligators. Next stop was a crocodile. Well 2 eyes sticking out of the water anyway. When I walked around the other side of the enclosure the crocodile came completely out of the water. When I asked why it had jumped out of the water towards me the reply was “He things you have a Guinea Pig for him. You want to feed him a Guinea Pig...

Read this book

by muguruki

If you are only going to read one book on Africa make sure it is this one. The former Times and Independent journalist and now director of the Royal African Society Richard Dowden has written this excellent book and writes of his experiences and observations of Africa starting with his first encounter with the African continent as a teacher in Uganda in 1971. Michael Buerk says of this book:"At last a book about Africa the way it is. Richard Dowden is the Africa experts Africa expert. Drawing on more than thirty years of extraordinary experiences the length and breadth of the continent he shows us an Africa of light as well as darkness, engaging as well as horrifying. The real Africa."
