by Oana_bic juststroll on the narrow lanes full of potery, clothes, flagrances, plates, tea houses & food stands... the last days of ramadan were so mad in the souq! the aid is kind of equivalent of the cristian Christmas and the Aid involves wearing new clothes, spending time with the family & hugging all the loved ones... For years the medina has risked to disappear for the state of abandonment in which it oppressed. Of sure interest inside the medina it is the Mosque of the Ulivo (Jamaa Zaituna), one of the more important religious centers of the Arabic world, built employing 200 columns recovered by the ruins of the Roman Carthage. Other attractions to be visited, once to Tunis, are the Great Mosque, the Museum to Dar Ben Abdallah, the complex of the three Medresa (Koranic college), the Tourbet el Bey (graves of the bey, gentlemen of Tunisi), the Cathedral of Saint Louis, erect in 1890 in Byzantine-Moorish style. Built during the VII century - AD, medina is the historical and cultural center of the modern Tunis and the ideal place to gather the vital spirit of the city. In it it is possible to perceive a myriad of constructions that tell the manifold dominations succeeded in the centuries -Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Ottomans, etc. Leave a Comment

The great Mosque by schlumpf Simply a must once in Tunis, walk trough the Medina and have a visit of all the Mosque that has been build in this part of the city. The walk itself is already pretty interesting, but what will take your attention, will be definitely the WHITE colour that you will find everywhere in ever building, in every street and so on… It gives you such a quietness…is a relaxing way to get in touch with this part of the city… ….Better then to start from the market! Tunisia, Tunis, Medina, Dar Ben Abdallah by Childish, 4 more photos This 18th century palace Dar Ben Abdallah houses the Musée du Patrimoine Traditionnel de la Ville de Tunis- the folk museum. The expositions in four ground rooms represents the life syle in the end of the 19th and in the beginning of 20th century. In one room is represented women's activities, in another - wedding scene, in third - men's daily life. The internal countryward is extremely beautiful. Leave a Comment Directions: in Medina of Tunis I found this museum very difficult. After I made several attempts to find it by myself finally I asked a local guy and he led me there. He doesn't refuse to take 2TD which I offered to him.

Everything is centered around Avenue Bourguiba. If it's French-style nightlife you're after, head south to find the restaurants, clubs and cinemas. Along Avenue Bourguiba there are plenty of cinemas, embassies, coffee shops, hotels & restaurants. . The Festival of the Medina is held during Ramadan and its icing on the cake announcing l'Aid is the festival of lights. Here's a pic just in front of the National Theatre & another one with Avenue ourguiba by night. Leave a Comment

what a joy i had shopping in the souks this time!! done lots of morocco with so much hassle every step - i was told there would be less here in Tunis, i still got more invites 'lady, lady, have a look' then i liked but my 2 years of handicraft experience in morocco was going to pay off. i had a good idea of prices and how to haggle and how not to fall for their tricks!!?? and i bought some great stuff. some lovely decorated babouches and jerba clothing, nice cotton embroidered tops and my own chechia and some excellent silver goods - decorative coasters, photo frames and koran holder box!! i refused invites of guides until i eventually sucummbed as i wanted to know how to get to the old and 'famous' cafe chaouechin and the souk of the chechias that it was in. so it wasnt too bad allowing Yassine to show me around, i got a good demo of chechia making - traditional 'Fez' hats, a dying skill and was glad to buy one from the pleasant guy showing me. Have a good roam, the souks do close quite surprisingly early at night though! i ended up taking some back streets of the closing shops which became quite dark and a bit scarey but made it okay back onto the main souk street where people still were - ran into yassine again and did some more shopping. Kasbah Mosque from Place du Gouvernement by barryg23, 3 more photos On Place du Kasbah, just beyond the place du Gouvernement in the west of the medina you can see some of the oldest and newest Tunisian architecture. This area is home to many government departments, including the prime minister's office. Not surprisingly, many buildings here are off limits and there are plenty of armed security guards in the area. The largest building on the square is the modern municipal building on the west side which has a modern sculpture at its entrance and at least 10 Tunisian flags on its exterior. The distinctive Sadiki College, with its twin domes and whitewashed façade. is at the north end of the square. This is the most prestigious college in Tunisia and many illustrious Tunisians, such as Bourguiba, were educated here. The most impressive building is the Kasbah Mosque to the south. This is one of the few remaining parts of the large Kasbah which stood here during the Hafsids reign in medieval times. The mosque dates from the 13th century and has been used as a model for many other mosques in Tunisia. Much of the rest of the Kasbah has been taken over by government buildings. Leave a Comment

i followed the Rough Guide books info on recommended buildings to see, also discussed with tourist office near Place 7 November who gave me an excellent street map to walk around accurately with. Apparently there are over 400 art deco buildings in Tunis, from urban villas to apartment buildings and office blocks. I am told the densest area of buildings to be found is in the area north of the main drag Ave bourguiba. look for: North of rue de Londres: Villa Boubil 16 rue d'Autriche(regarded as the masterpiece, check the rippling lines and elaborate metalwork though the place is quite rundown and ?semi-abandoned) 20 rue de L'inde 2, 43m and 131 ave de la Liberte (no 43 is the excellent synagogue - be careful of the police who are parked outside it to protect it - they tried to accuse me of taking illegal photos!! so i had to plead my case with guidebooks etc recommending this Art deco address) but theres a good monoprix supermarket up there too - excellent international CDs for only £1.25 each!!!) Central: 12 ave habib thameur 56 ave de paris South of ave bourguiba 22 rue d'algerie 34 ave farhat hached 13 rue oum kalthoum Montfluery: 21 rue allal el fassi i had a great time roaming around with my camera and checking out all the patterns, geometric reliefs and metalwork - look up and around!! my Quwait guys! by schlumpf Another amazing activity that is a MUST is simply take a sit in a Tea House, order some Mint tea, smoke some chincha and start to knowing people. Tunisian are so gentle, and very very very close, so will be very easy to know persons on your own way. This is a very interesting activity as you can open your mind, and check things from another point of view, what is very important! Actually, we are all people! Leave a Comment
