Restaurant BAROUTA is one of the oldest restaurants in Kairouan more then 80 years of service (since 1925)
It's situate in the middle of the city in the SOUK behind BIR BAROUTA (on Ave 7 November ) the historical place
The menu is a typical lunchtime one with couscous, salads, soup, grilled meats, spaghetti, omelette, etc and a dessert for set price of TD8.
Food was pretty good and plentiful and the place is very popular with tourists

This patisserie is located on the main Ave 7 Novembre streets within the Medina and specialises in selling sweets, biscuits and cakes including makhroud, a date-filled semolina cake soaked in honey. Pop in and sample some of the delights on offer.

The restaurant at the Hotel Splendid serves food from a set menu in the evening for TD7,500 which you can order in advance to save yourself TD2,500. There are only 3 choices for starter, main or desert. I had a soup, good turkey cous cous and a few Makhroud (a date-filled semolina cake soaked in honey). There ain't that many good looking restaurants in Kairouan so this might be a good choice.

This small snack restaurant is located on Ave 7 Novembre which is the main shopping street that runs north to south within the Medina and is one of the few places to eat within the Medina itself. The menu is a typical lunchtime one with salads, soup, briqs (crispy pancake filled with an egg and various fillings), grilled meats, spaghetti, kebabs, omlette etc and a dessert for a set price of TD8. Food was pretty good and plentiful and the place is very popular with tourists.

We arrived quite late to Kairouan and after finding a hotel we went looking for a restaurant in the medina or the souk the owner of Restaurant BAROUTA had called as and said we should call in later for a meal. He was really friendly so we said we'd think about it. Most of the places mentioned in the guidebook were near our hotel including BAROUTA restaurant which looked nice and cheap. The waiter was friendly and he had shown us the menu and enticed us in before we realized the place was empty. It was slightly disconcerting eating in a restaurant on our own though the same thing had happened to us before in Marrkaech and on that occasion many more people came in as the evening went on. And we had had a great meal. No such luck on this occasion with the crowds of people. There were more waiters than customers but I didn't mind so much. The food was very nice, we ahd a lovely bottle of Terrale Wine and we spent a very relaxed hour in the place. I think it cost 9D each for the menu and an extra 10 or so for the wine.
Favorite Dish: couscous is my favorite dish it Very delicious

We arrived quite late to Kairouan and after finding a hotel and leaving the medina we went looking for a restaurant. When we were in our room looking out over the balcony the owner of Restaurant Krawan had called up and said we should call in later for a meal. He was really friendly so we said we'd think about it.
Most of the places mentioned in the guidebook were near our hotel including Karawan which looked nice and cheap. However, we were both in the mood for wine so we went for the slightly more expensive restaurant at the Hotel Splendid. The waiter was friendly and he had shown us the menu and enticed us in before we realized the place was empty. It was slightly disconcerting eating in a big restaurant on our own though the same thing had happened to us before in Marrkaech and on that occasion many more people came in as the evening went on. And we had had a great meal.

We returned as we had said we would to Karawan on our senond day in the city. The same waiter was there fromt he night before and he remembered us though he seemed a little less friendly today. Perhaps he was having a bad day.
Nevertheless we had a very nice meal. We sat out on the terrace and had the set menu for 8 Dinars each. There were the usual appetizers of olives, tuna and bread, followed by a Salade Tunisienne for starters, couscous a l'agneau for main and fruit for dessert. I'd had this meal about 5 times now on the trip and I still wasn't tired of it.
