We made a stop for refreshments in this Café, the place is covered with stickers of all the tour operators that make a stop in this spot, and because of the hundreds of stickers they have, i assume that is a very popular place.

Almost every independent traveller in Douz ends up in Restaurant Ali Baba, run by a very friendly man called Ali. The food is typical Tunisian fare value. You have the usual choice of Brik a l'Oeuf or Salade Tunisien for starters and then dishes like Merguez or Couscous a l'Agneau for main course. However, it's very cheap and the Ali is a really good host. He seems like a well travelled guy, showing us photos of his trips to Europe and elsewhere in Africa.

We sat outside in the back of the restaurant and Ali turned on the music and the lights and tried to get things going. There are plenty of chairs out here and a Bedouin tent for smoking after your meal. The atmosphere was a little lacking however, as we were the only customers. Perhaps because it was a Monday in March. Ali said it gets much busier in summer.

When you have the right equipment, no need to any restaurant. All you need is to have a gas burner, plenty of water and rice. Everything else can be bought locally : eggs, tomatoes, fresh white onions, salad and of course very delicious bread. We do not need any thing else to make a very good meal !

Restaurant La Rosa: Restaurant in Douz oasis in 2002

Restaurant La Rosa, though recommended by several guidebooks, allows to feed, but nothing else. The waiters are not very friendly. They do not serve any alcoholic beverage. However, it is clean and if you don’t find any other place, you can come hear to feed!
