Leaving Ajim

Ferries from Ajim to Jorf are fairly frequent leaving every 30 minutes. The journey takes about 20 minutes and it's very good value at 800 millimes (0.8 of a Dinar) for a car. Foot passengers travel for free and also avoid the hassle of having to wait.

We arrived at the port shortly at about 10.20 am hoping to get the 10.30 ferry. No such luck however and we didn't board a ferry until 11.30. The ferries are fairly small and take about 25-30 vehicles at a time.

Queues are said to be particularly bad in summer and at weekends. Our wait of over an hour wasn't something we had planned. However, there are shops and a cafe near the port which helped pass the time.

The journey itself is fairly uneventful. You get a good impression of just how flat Jerba is after you leave Ajim. On the other side, the coast is a little more interesting, though there is little to detain visitors in Jorf.

And if you are in car be prepared for some agressive driving from the other drivers when you leave the ferry. Cars may board in an orderly fashion but disembarking is a different story. As we were trying to pull out the cars to the left and the right of us both tried to push in front of us in a mad dash to get away.

Waiting in Ajim

barryg23 profile photo

Ajim is a small town in the south-western tip of Jerba, just off the coast of Tunisia. There's not much to do in this town...except wait and wait for a ferry to Jorf, on the mainland of Tunisia.

Ajim: gate to Jerba

kbl profile photo

Ajim is one of the two locations where a connection between the Tunisian mainland and Jerba is possible. The other location is El Kantara, where the transfer is made by bridge, and not by Ferry.
