Favorite thing: Djerba is the biggest island of Tunisia, situated in the southern part of the country. It is connected to the mainland by the narrow isthmus, known eversince the Roman times. The local landscape, very plane, looks more like a desert with sand on the ground and lots of palm-trees.

Favorite thing: Last year I was in Nabeul, in the North Tunisia, where the sea-water is very shallowly but pretty clean and almost without sea-grass. Comparing it with Island of Djerba, it was acceptable. The seashore of Djerba, however, wass the biggest disappointing to me. I saw people standing in the water several hundreds of meters far from the shore and yet the water was barely over their knees. Besides, this endless brown coloured sea-grass is covering entire shore around the island making entrance into the water almost fastidious.

Favorite thing: This picture shows a close-up on the top of the minaret of another mosque in Houmt Souk (sorry, I do not remember the name of this mosque). Traditionally, the "muezzin" called for the prier from the top of the minaret. Now, loud speakers, as can be seen clearly on this photo have replaced human voice alone !

Favorite thing: On this close-up, the white pencil shaped minaret (or rocket looking to my opinion !) of the Turks Mosque stands out fiercely against the dark blue sky of Djerba. I find that the dark blue of the sky and the white of the walls fit perfectly !

Favorite thing: The "Mosquée des Turcs" ((Turks mosque) shows clearly an Ottoman influence with its pencil shaped minaret, very unusual in the Maghreb. This is one of the few minarets of that shape that can be found in the whole Maghreb.

Favorite thing: From the platform on top of the fort, the view towards the north-east is upon the twin domes and the half-cylindrical roofing in the foreground. On the left, a part of the crenellated walls. The sea is in the background.

Favorite thing: Entering in the fort, you will find an ancient Roman-like "impluvium" and a building with two doms. Inside, a room has been dedicated to the history of the fort and presents the artifacts that had been found during the diggings.

Favorite thing: In front of the entrance, the square is dusty and very hot though a few palm trees bring a little shade. There are a lot of flower beds of ficoïde (Mesambryanthemum nodiflorum), a succulent plant that gives both white and red flowers and that is often planted along roads in Tunisia.

Favorite thing: Inside the Fort, archeologists have lead diggings that have revealed remains of an older fort, built in 1289 by Roger de Loria, admiral of the Aragon and Sicily kingdom. It was itself built on the remains of an Ancient Romans structure !
