Sidi Bou Saïd Restaurants
Au Bon Vieux Temps: great Tunisian cuisine
Au Bon Vieux Temps is a high class restaurant in Sidi Bou Said, well worth the drive from Tunis and a nice change from the food in the Souks. They have photos of presidents and famous people in their staircase, so it's probably one of the best classed restaurants in the country. We went on a recommendation from Tunisian friends, and since then we always go there when we are in Tunisia. The food is not cheap, but it's fine Tunisian cuisine -- the couscous and entrees and everything are basically the same as everywhere but cooked with higher quality ingredients and a lot more finesse. It's a small place, and you don't really have to dress up but I wouldn't go there in shorts and sandals.
The restaurant overlooks the bay and the view is quite nice.
Around the corner there is stand where they sell doughnuts -- I think they are called bambalouine or bambalona or something like that. It's so well known among the locals that they are only open for a few hours every day, around 4pm, but their "Tunisian doughnuts" are wonderful, so light and chewy.
Favorite Dish: They have an entree which is different vegetable dishes -- very small portions of each, rather Nouvelle Cuisine, a bit frustrating, but very tasty and fragrant, and of course the couscous, we really liked the fish couscous because it's a more delicate and slightly more unusual couscous than the usual lamb one, although that was good too.
I'm not sure about the prices, it may be more than mentioned here.Related to:
