A Tourist train runs regularly between the Medina of Sousse and the Marina of Port el Kantanaoui. Its 2.500 dinars each way or 3.500 dinars return. Note if you get a return ticket though you must use the same colour train you arrived on - there are blue, white, green and red ones - otherwise you will pay single fare again. Journey time is about 15 bumpy minutes! Timetables are available either end so check for your return time if necessary. They will stop en request en route too if you want to say return to your hotel rather than back to the medina.

An alternative to the tourist train is the Tuk-Tuk these are great fun to ride in (plus only one colour so you can get any one back!) and are the same price as the train - just watch your head as you get in and out. Its a bit cramped if you are tall and its difficult to see the scenery as you ride past.

Public transport is very cheap in Sousse - if you can understand the timetables!. The metro by the harbour goes to local areas such as Monastir for a few pence whist the main train station is not far from the old centre - adjacent to the bus terminal outside the medina walls. I must confess we either walked, used taxis or guided excursions during our short week. Others who took the train to Tunis for a day though said it was quite entertaining - often stopping on requests for locals and not necessarily at a station!

We wanted to go to El Djem. We have read in the tour guide that it was possible to walk to the taxi-plaza (10 minutes walking from the beach) and from there with the group-taxi.

We went to the plaza and it was very busy there. Taxi-drivers were shouting out names where they were heading to.
We asked which taxi went to El Djem. We were told to wait and a taxi came.....

It was a OPEL (with 6 places, 2 were build in the trunk!!!) and we sat in the trunk of the car.
We had to bend our head or else we bumped into the window.
Other (tunesiers) passengers sat down and we left.
There were oriental curtains and they played arabic songs (yeah!!).
The people in the car didn't speak Englisch.
But we arrived El Djem safely (bad roads!!).
We arranged that they pick us up at 18 h.
When it turned out later and got dark we got scared..
Luckely they came and we had another weard drive (broken door, exchanging driver without notice!).

We came home save, but NEVER a taxi-drive again in this country!!!!!!!

The journey from Sousse to Tunis takes about 2 hours by train. There are fairly regular trains between the two towns and it costs about 7 Dinar for a single ticket. Sousse's train station is in the Ville Nouvelle on Boulevard Hassouna Ayachi, about 10 minutes walk from the medina.

  • This is valid for all places in Tunisia: yellow taxis are used inside the town, white once - between towns.
Taking a yellow taxi in Sousse, ask the driver to switch the meter on. He may refuse, then you need to bargain or to get off. There are many taxies, so it is not a problem at all to get one or look for another.
Most of the drivers are polite but there are exceptions. Don't expect that they speak English.
The prices are not very high. I noticed that the initial tax vary but usually it costs 2 TD for 5 km, for example.
While walking through the street if a free taxi passes away it usually beeps to invite to you to take it.

Sousse and Port el Kantaoui have boat trips available - various times and lengths - not once out of harbour is was quite choppy and cool, take some layers. They will entice you with trips to see dolphins and the fish with glass bottom boats and small submersibles. We took an hour one and saw nothing exciting and got cold...really I wouldn't bother unless in summer season. The galleon type boats looked quite impressive for the kids though.

The journey from Tunis to Sousse takes 1h 50 minutes and costs 6.60 TD. There are also two-way tickets with price of 11 TD, but I couldn't buy one because I don't speak French or Arabic.
The train may be full so the most of the people harry up getting on the train, travelling standing is absolutely possible. So, if you see a free seat don't hessitate to take it.
The train was late about 5 minutes. At the departure time there was no train at all so we had to wait for it.
On the way to Sousse there were two local girls who paid tickets to a medial train station but they were caught. Don't try it, the tickets are cheap enough.

  • Tuk-Tuks are opened vans with 9 seats for passenger travelling the 9km distance from Sousse to Port El Kantaoui and back for 2 TD oneway. It leaves once it is full and this makes it the cheapest way to get to Sousse or Port El Kantaoui, resp, if you are alone. If not, consider taking taxi.
It drives you to your hotel if is on the way Sousse - Port El Kantaoui.

  • Coloured train is similar to Tuk-Tuk but with more seats. The ticket from Sousse to Port El Kantaoui costs 3,50 TD. On stops it is written that it is a two-way-ticket, but I never tried to use the ticket again. If you are getting off on the way, not on the final stop, the ticket may cost less.
